Jun 01, 2021

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo Department of Athletics mourns the loss of women's soccer alumna Jasmine Johnson '12 who passed away on May, 24, 2021 at the age of 35 after an over decade long battle with leukemia. Johnson was a two-time All-South Region selection for the Lions after transferring to Saint Leo following one year at the University of Florida.

Johnson battled leukemia starting in 2009 and overcame many obstacles to continue to compete in soccer at the collegiate level. She was named All-Sunshine State Conference Second Team in 2010 as a junior while also earning Second Team All-South Region accolades from both Daktronics and NSCAA. She followed that up with an NSCAA All-South Region Second Team honor as a senior in 2011. Overall she competed in 38 career games for the Lions while scoring five goals and dishing out 10 assists while holding down the defensive line. She helped lead the Lions in 2011 to their first Sunshine State Conference Regular Season Championship.

The Clearwater, Fla., native earned a bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in sociology in 2012 from Saint Leo University. Following graduation, she worked several hospitality jobs while also continuing her health battle. She also found time to stay involved with the soccer community including working with the Tampa Dynamo FC as a head coach for several different youth girls' teams.

A celebration of Jasmine's life will be held on Sunday, June 13th at noon at the Ed Radice Sports Complex, 14720 Ed Radice Drive, Tampa, Fla.
