Lions Compete at Spikes Invitational

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's and women's track programs returned to Daytona Beach, Fla. for the third time this season to compete in the Spikes Invitational hosted by Embry-Riddle. The Lions posted 12 top-10 finishes including winning the 5,000m on the women's side. Freshman Anna O'Connor earned the Lions victory in the 5K as she topped the field.

TOP PERFORMERS
SAINT LEO MEN:
  • Sophomore Felix Nadeborn led four Lions in the 1,500m as he placed third overall in the event after stopping the clock at 4:02.35. Freshman Lucas Liard earned a top-five finish as he placed fourth in 4:09.84 while classmate Aidan O'Leary took seventh while crossing the line in 4:20.42. The final Lion finisher was another freshman Jacob Barnes who crossed 12th in 4:45.94.
  • The men's 4x400m relay team, consisting of Barnes, Nadeborn, freshman Colby Steger and senior Brandon Cruz, took fourth overall after clocking in at 3:57.93.
  • Sophomore Fabio Fornarelli paced the Lions in the 800m where Saint Leo had six entrants. Fornarelli took seventh in 2:00.55. he was joined in the race by Liard (14th, 2:05.57), O'Leary (19th, 2:10.73), Cruz (20th, 2:15.94), Steger (21st, 2:19.11) and Barnes (22nd, 2:22.18).
  • Freshman Vineet Shinde competed in the men's long jump where he placed 10th after touching down in 5.15m (16-10.75).
  • Senior Andrew Sands and Shinde competed in the 100m. Sands took 15th with a time of 11.65 while Shinde crossed 21st at 13.51.
  • Sands also ran the 200m where he placed 22nd in 23.90.
 
SAINT LEO WOMEN:
  • Freshman Anna O'Connor earned the lone victory for the Lions on the day as she won the 5,000m with a time of 18:49.33.    
  • The women's 4x100m relay team took second in the event behind NCAA Division I Mercer. Freshman Tanisha Cave, sophomore Vyctoria Boger, junior Tayler Wright and sophomore Robyn Burrows took the baton around the track in 53.37.
  • Sophomore Tania Jarreau led a trio of Lions in the 800m with a third place finish. Jarreau crossed the line in 2:19.12 to lead the way. Junior Kerry Reilly came across next for the Lions in ninth at 2:37.43 while freshman Ashleigh Primacio came in three spots back in 12th with a time of 2:57.71.
  • The 4x400m relay team picked up a fourth place finish as Boger, Burrows, Jarreau and redshirt sophomore Skyelar Aguilar teamed up to post a time of 4:20.59.
  • Reilly was the lone Lion in the 1,500m as she earned a second top-10 finish with another ninth place showing after stopping the clock at 5:20.92.
  • Burrows led a group of six Lions in the 200m as she came across 12th with a time of 26.51. She was joined by Boger (16th, 28.12), Cave (17th, 28.69), Wright (19th, 29.88), junior Maryleslie Javier (20th, 31.89) and freshman Barbara Whitty (21st, 32.71).
  • Boger, Burrows and Aguilar competed in the 400m with Boger taking 13th in 1:03.91 to lead the group. Burrows came across next in 15th at 1:04.90 and was followed closely by Aguilar who took 16th with a time of 1:05.06.
  • Cave led a quartet in the 100m as she crossed the finish line in 13.98 to take 16th. She was joined by Wright (17th, 14.35), Javier (18th, 14.88) and Whitty (19th, 15.28).
 
UP NEXT:
Saint Leo takes a weekend off before returning to the track Saturday, April 17. The Lions will send a group to the Embry-Riddle Invite as well as the Tom Jones Memorial hosted by the University of Florida.

Keeping Our Lions Healthy & Safe
Saint Leo University Athletics is keeping our student-athletes healthy and safe by following a number of measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This includes having student-athletes tested or screened on a regular basis, traveling in smaller groups, holding competitions without fans in attendance, avoiding overnight trips, and wearing masks when not competing. These safety standards meet those set by the NCAA Division II and the Sunshine State Conference President's Council. At Saint Leo University, the COVID-19 Incident Command Team also reviews the teams' safety protocol and monitors adherence on a regular basis.
