Lions Post Five First Place Finishes at Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's and women's track programs traveled to the University of Tampa for the second time this season and picked up five event victories as well as several other top-10 finishes. The originally scheduled tri-meet featuring the Lions, Spartans and the Moccasins of Florida Southern was expanded to welcome in Southeastern as well as runners from Flagler College. Senior Shane Bracken continued his strong season as he posted the 16th-fastest 1,500m time in NCAA Division II this season while winning the event by just under five seconds.

TOP PERFORMERS
SAINT LEO MEN:
  • Senior Shane Bracken led a group of five Lions in the 1,500m as he blazed past the field with a time of 3:46.91 earning himself a provisional qualifying mark just over two seconds from an automatic bid. Sophomore Felix Nadeborn took fifth in the event at 3:57.95 while classmate Fabio Fornarelli placed seventh after crossing the line in 3:59.75. Freshman Lucas Liard rounded out the top-10 finishers in the event as he took ninth after stopping the clock at 4:03.02.
  • Sophomore Pierre Galbourdin led the way in the 5,000m as he topped the field at 14:54.79. Nadeborn finished two spots back in third, for his second top-five finish of the day. He crossed the line in 15:22.57.
  • Senior Andrew Sands picked up a pair of third place finishes as he took third in both the 100m and 200m events. He clocked in at 11.73 in the 100m and 25.50 in the 200m. Newcomer Vineet Shinde joined him taking fifth in both events. Shinde crossed the line in 13.30 in the 100m and 27.55 in the 200m.  
  • Freshman Conner Chapman earned a top-five finish in the 3,000m as he took fifth overall in 10:12.96.
  • Freshman Aidan O'Leary earned a top-10 finish in the 800m as he placed eighth overall. The Illinois native stopped the clock at 2:04.55.
  • The final top-10 finish for the Lions came in the final event of the night, the 4x400m relay. The Lions took fifth as freshmen Colby Steger, O'Leary, Jacob Barnes and Liard teamed up to complete the four laps in 3:48.61.
 
SAINT LEO WOMEN:
  • Sophomore Robyn Burrows earned a pair of victories Friday night in both the 100m and 200m events. She topped the field in the 100m in 12.84 and flew past the 200m in 26.42. She was joined by junior Maryleslie Javier and freshman Barbara Whitty in the 100m. Javier took fifth at 14.80 while Whitty placed sixth with a time of 15.75. The trio were joined by redshirt sophomore Skyelar Aguilar in the 200m. Aguilar took third overall at 27.47 followed by Javier in fifth at 31.77 and Whitty in sixth with a time of 33.78.    
  • Sophomore Tania Jarreau led a trio of Lions in the 800m as she topped the field in 2:15.72 to earn the third Lions victory of the evening. Junior Aoife Mahony came in three spots back in fourth after crossing the line in 2:22.01. The final top-10 finisher was Aguilar who placed eighth at 2:29.06.
  • Junior Paige Patterson earned a second place finish in the 5,000m as she completed the distance in 18:07.41. Freshman Anna O'Connor joined her in the race, taking fourth at 18:17.06.
  • Juniors Georgia Clode and Kerry Reilly opened the meet for the Lions by taking seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 1,500m. Clode finished in 5:14.63 while Reilly crossed just under a second later in 5:15.47.
  • The final top-10 finishes for the Lions came in their final event of the night, the 4x400m relay. The Lions first squad took second comprised of freshman Tanisha Cave, sophomore Vyctoria Boger, Reilly and Patterson who completed the distance in 4:10.28. The second Lions squad took fifth overall. Burrows, Mahony, Jarreau and Aguilar turned in a time of 4:31.74.

Saint Leo returns to action next week as they travel to Embry-Riddle on Tuesday, April 27 and North Florida on Thursday, April 29.

Saint Leo University Athletics is keeping our student-athletes healthy and safe by following a number of measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This includes having student-athletes tested or screened on a regular basis, traveling in smaller groups, limiting the number of fans in attendance, avoiding overnight trips, and wearing masks when not competing. These safety standards meet those set by the NCAA Division II and the Sunshine State Conference President's Council. At Saint Leo University, the COVID-19 Incident Command Team also reviews the teams' safety protocol and monitors adherence on a regular basis.
