Swimming Opens Season with Several Strong Performances

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's and women's swimming teams dropped a pair of meets to host Florida Southern Friday afternoon. The two teams competed in a pair of shortened meets to help both teams qualify for the minimum number of competitions prior to the 2021 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championship in mid-March. The Mocs took all four meet wins but several Lions put up strong individual performances.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Men's Finals:
Florida Southern 94, Saint Leo 25 | Florida Southern 53, Saint Leo 49
Women's Finals: Florida Southern 71, Saint Leo 48 | Florida Southern 83, Saint Leo 21

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The meets consisted of 26 total events including 14 in the opening meet and 12 in the second meet.
  • The Saint Leo men won four of the 13 male events while the Saint Leo women also took four of the 13.
  • The Lion men had six NCAA "B" qualifying standard times including a pair from junior Matthew Daniel.
  • The Saint Leo women posted a one-two finish in the 100 back while the men captured a one-two finish in the 100 fly.
 
MEN'S TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Junior Matthew Daniel posted a pair of NCAA "B" standards including the 500 and 1000 freestyle. Daniel took second in the 1000 free in the opening meet with a qualyfing time of 9:20.40. He followed that performance with a win in the 500 free in the second meet with a winning time of 4:29.99.
  • Freshmen Spencer Jyawook and Jakub Kwasny made the most of their collegiate debut as they finished one-two in the 100 fly while each posting an NCAA "B" standard. Jyawook took the win in 48.72 while Kwasny touched just behind at 48.96.
  • Freshman Szymon Leszega had a big start to his career as well taking first in the 100 free with a "B" standard time of 45.35.
  • The other "B" standard came in the 200 free as freshman Carlos Nava took third but still posted a "B" standard of 1:39.95.
  • Junior Hampus Lovinge returned in 2021 doing what he's always done, winning the 200 back after outpacing the field in 1:54.30.
 
WOMEN'S TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Freshman Anett Daka opened her collegiate career with a pair of wins in the 100 and 200 back. She posted a one-two finish in the 100 with fellow freshman Jayana Pasteur. Daka took the top spot in 56.49 while Pasteur touched at 58.22. Daka then won the 200 back in 2:05.57.
  • Junior Vittoria Bonsanti Feniello picked up a victory in the 1000 free before taking second in the 200. She clocked in at 10:40.17 in the 1000 before stopping the clock at 1:54.12 in the 200.
  • The final victor on the women's side was freshman Emma Bjoernholdt who won the 100 breast in 1:06.09.
 
UP NEXT:
Saint Leo will return to action tomorrow, February 27 against the same Florida Southern teams for a pair of meets beginning at 11 a.m. in Lakeland.
