Lions Ledger: Volleyball, Swimming, Basketballs on the Road in Final Crossover Weekend

  • RECORDS: Saint Leo 12-17, 6-12 SSC | Lynn 17-11, 12-6 SSC | Palm Beach Atlantic 16-13, 9-9 SSC
  • Saint Leo heads into its final weekend following a senior night win (3-1) over Rollins last Saturday. The Lions' final business trip will take them to Lynn and Palm Beach Atlantic over the weekend.
  • Against Rollins, Sophomore Madelyn Eden took the top spot in kills and tied for the team lead in blocks Saturday night. The Bartow, Fla. native put down a career-high 13 kills while stuffing five Rollins attacks at the net. Redshirt junior Elizabeth Sandoval joined Eden and Turner in double-figures with 11 kills while adding a pair of blocks. Sophomore Ally-Reese William came up just shy of double-figures with nine kills while tying Eden for the lead in blocks with five. The Lions had a season-high 13 service aces in the match with Turner and junior Skylar Singleton leading the way with five each.
  • On the season, senior Brooke Turner paces the offense with 2.76 kills per set (k/s) followed by Sandoval with 2.29 k/s and junior Madie Certain with 1.99 k/s. Senior setter Anna Garrett will wrap up her tremendous career at Saint Leo. Garrett heads into the weekend with a career 3,963 assists. She is currently averaging 8.38 assists per set (a/s) with a season tally of 763.
  • Defensively, senior Payton Bellano enters her final weekend in the Green and Gold with 435 digs, 4.31 digs per set (d/s). The defense specialist from Geneva, Ill. has racked up 1,371 digs in 364 sets. At the net, the Lions have earned 193 blocks on the season averaging 1.87 as a team. Margaret Schirm has accumulated a team-high 62 blocks supported by Eden Madelyn with 55 and Colby Stempkowski with 41.
  • Lynn enters the weekend ready to defend a three-match win streak. The Fighting Knights took down Florida Southern (3-1), Barry (3-1), and Florida Tech (3-0).
  • Nadia Lindner paces the offense with 3.57 k/s followed by Sonja Udovcic with 2.62 k/s. They are set up by setters Emily Edwards and Adrianna Casados with 5.75 a/s and 4.61 a/s, respectively. Lauren Odom has been the Fighting Knight's main defender at the net with 1.22 b/s.
  • HISTORY: On Saturday, Oct. 16 the Lions fell in a four set battle (18-24, 25-21, 19-25, 16-25) in the Marion Bowman Activities Center. Brooke Turner once again led the Lions with 15 kills in the match while also digging up 10 balls and posting three blocks. Elizabeth Sandoval joined Turner in double-figures with 12 kills while adding seven digs. Colby Stempkowski just missed out on double-digits with nine kills and a team-high tying four blocks. Madelyn Eden also added four blocks to go along with her four kills. Anna Garrett dished out 48 assists from her setter position while also digging up 10 balls. Libero Payton Bellano dug up a team-best 20 balls.
  • PBA enters the weekend coming off a two-match win streak after taking care of Florida Tech (3-2) and Barry (3-0). Before hosting the Lions, the Sailfish will host Eckerd Friday night in the Rubin Arena.
  • Alyse Cundiff (3.48 k/s) and Amber Rowoldt (2.82 k/s) have been the 'Fish kill leaders this season. Cundiff has compiled a dangerous .207 attack percentage for PBA's offense. Meanwhile, Jazz Schmidt has done the work to set her teammates up with 6.5 a/s and Ally Smith has done the work on defense averageing 3.86 digs/s. Finally, Anna Gregerson has made herself known at the net with 108 blocks.
  • HISTORY: On Friday, October 15, Saint Leo earned its third sweep of the season taking care of Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-20). The Lions were led by senior Brooke Turner and junior Madi Certain who each reached double-digit kills in the victory.

  • Saint Leo recovered from its loss to #19 Florida Tech with an epic 132-130 win at Rollins. The prevailing Lions won 11 of 14 races, captured nine individual events victories and both relays. Four Lions each picked up two individual victories on the day.
  • Junior Hugo Chopineau took both the distance freestyle events as he won the 1000 free in 9:47.56 before posting a one-two finish in the 500 free with sophomore Devin Green. Chopineau stopped the clock at 4:47.37 while Green came in at 4:50.38. Green also earned an individual victory of his own in the 200 freestyle as he topped the field in 1:43.76. Green was also part of the winning 400 medley and 200 freestyle relays.
  • Sophomore Szymon Leszega took home the two sprint freestyle events. He blazed downed the pool in the 50 free in 21.82 before claiming the 100 free in 46.74. He also took part in the winning 400 medley and 200 freestyle relays.
  • Sophomore Jakub Kwasny was the final two-time individual winner as he swept the butterfly events He won the 100 in 52.11 before winning the 200 in 1:57.50. Kwasny also participated in both the winning 400 medley and 200 freestyle relays.
  • Green, Nava, Kwasny and Leszega teamed up in the 400 medley relay to win the event in 3:34.75.
  • Sophomore RJ Ferguson, Leszega, Kwasny and Green took home the final event of the afternoon as the quartet teamed up to post a time of 1:26.20 to win the 200 freestyle relay.
  • Tampa bounced back from a 181-81 loss to No. 10 Florida Southern on Oct. 22 in a massive win at Florida Tech, 207-54, last Friday, Nov. 12.
  • Mikael Haugen earned top marks in three events. Haugen placed first in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 21.21 and finished first in the 100 Yard Freestyle (46.70). Finally Haugen took first place with teammates Hugo Bustamente, Jared Mindek, and Kenan Dean in the 400 Medley Relay with a time of 3:26.42.
  • Bustamante helped take first in the 400 Medley Relay and won the 500 Yard Freestyle with a time of 4:44.60. He also placed second in the Spartan's top-three sweep of the 100 Yard Freestyle with a time of 47.30.
  • Joe Bozzi won the 1,000 Yard Freestyle event with a time of 9:34.87 and won the 500 Yard Freestyle with a time of 4:44.60.
  • HISTORY: The last time Tampa and Saint Leo swam against each other during the regular season it was in a multi-program competition from Dec. 17-19, 2019. Tampa won the top spot (1308) followed by Wingate (798), Indian River (558), Florida Southern (503), Lenoir-Rhyne (315.5), Saint Leo (120.5), Catawba (82), Nova Southeastern (33).

  • Saint Leo bounced back from a 138-123 loss to #15 Lynn on Friday, Oct. 29 by defeating #18 Rollins, 143-119, on Saturday, Nov. 6. The Lions had a swimmer within the top two finishers of all but one in the 13 event meet at Rollins. Saint Leo captured nine individual event victories and both relays. The Green and Gold also earned a pair of one-two finishes in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes.
  • Sophomore Isabelle Sering was one of four swimmers to earn a pair of individual victories on Saturday. Sering flew up and down the pool in the 50 freestyle to take the top spot at 24.40. She then took the win in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.13. Sering was also part of the winning 400 medley relay squad and the winning 20 freestyle relay team.
  • Sophomore Anett Daka swept the backstroke events winning both the 100 and 200 backstroke. She was joined in both races by Romane Cayla who took third in each race. Daka took the 100 in 59.57 while Cayla came in at 1:01.83. Daka then earned the win in the 200 after touching the wall in 2:09.65. Cayla came in just under six seconds later at 2:15.24. Daka also took part in both winning relays, the 400 medley and 200 freestyle. Cayla earned a pair of third places finishes in the relays as well.
  • Senior Vittoria Bonsanti Feniello took home the two distance freestyle events. She won the 1000 freestyle after clocking in at 10:37.34 while winning the 500 freestyle in 5:11.72.
  • Sophomore Emma Bjoernholdt was also a two-time winner while also earning a second place individual win. The native of Denmark, won both the 200 breaststroke and 400 individual medley while placing second in the 200 butterfly. She along with teammate Elze Bielskute went one-two in the 200 breaststroke. Bjoernholdt earned the win in 2:26.73 while Bielskute finished just hundredths of a second behind at 2:26.84. Bjoernholdt then went on to win the 400 IM in 4:38.08 before placing second in the 200 butterfly after touching the wall in 2:11.75. Bjoernholdt also was part of winning 400 medley relay.
  • Sophomore Jayana Pasteur earned the only other individual victory for the Lions as she went one-two with Bielskute in the 100 breaststroke. Pasteur out-touched Bielskute at 1:07.05 while Bielskute stopped the clock at 1:07.26. Pasteur was part of the third place 400 medley relay while helping the Lions win the 200 free relay. Bielskute on the other hand was part of both the winning 400 medley and 200 free relays.
  • The Lions went first and third in the 400 medley relay. Daka, Bjoernholdt, Sering and Bielskute teamed up to win the event in 3:55.52 while Pasteur, senior Paulina Majszutowicz, Cayla and junior Mariana Navarrete took third in 4:07.11.
  • The Lions also went first and third in the 200 free relay. Daka, Bielskute, Pasteur and Sering teamed up for the "A" relay as the combined to clock in at 1:37.94 while Cayla, sophomore Gianna Policari, Navarrete and Majszutowicz teamed up on the "B" relay while taking third in 1:42.82.
  • No. 12 Tampa has yet to be defeated after opening the 2021-22 season against St. Thomas, Rollins, #19 Rollins, and Florida Tech. The Spartans have held every opponent to under 77 points, with Florida Tech earning the most with 76.
  • Elizaveta Bazarova helped teammates Mady Barnes, Julia Augustsson, and Katie Horan win the 400 Yard Medley Relay with a time of 3:53.44. Bazarova also took second in the 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:54.78 and third in 100 Yard Freestyle with a time of 52.77.
  • Barnes also earned top spots in two other events. She took first in the 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 58.03 and first in the 200 Yard Backstroke with a time of 2:09.56.
  • Augustsson won the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a final time of 1:05.02 and took first in the 200 Yard Breaststroke finishing with a time of 2:24.09.
  • The final member of the 400 Yard Medley Relay, Katie Horan, also won another event. Horan placed first in the 100 Yard Butterfly with a time of 57.65. She added a third place finish in the 200 Yard Butterfly with a final time of 2:10.18.
  • HISTORY: The last time the two programs faced each other during the regular season was on December 20, 2019 at the Spartan Invite hosted at the Doyle Aquatic Center at the Long Center in Clearwater, Fla. Wingate took the competition with 1,128 points followed by Tampa (876.5), West Florida (710.5), Indian River (548), Lenoir-Rhyne (173), Florida Southern (147), Saint Leo (70), Catawba (40), and Nova Southeastern (26).

  • Saint Leo looks to bounce back from a tight 68-64 loss to Flagler on Wednesday in the Bowman Center. Ayanna Trigg registered a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds. The graduate student forward standing at six feet went 6-for-8 from the floor including a perfect night on the stripe (4-4) and snagged six offensive rebounds and eight defensives. Amanda Ulrich led the Lions in scoring with 19 points going 7-for-25 on the field and tossing in three three-pointers and two at the charity stripe. She also added eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
  • After the first three games of the season, Ulrich leads the offensive averaging 16 points per game (ppg) with 48 shooting a 24.6-percent from the field. A. Trigg has earned a team-high 8.0 rebounds per game (rpg) with 24, split evenly between offensive and defensive boards. Tori Lesko follows closely behind with 6.0 rpg with 18, 17 of which have been defensive rebounds.
  • Florida Tech is playing host after defeating Flagler, 82-73, Tuesday night in the Charles and Ruth Clemente Center. Florida Tech got off to a strong start, taking a 12-4 lead within the first four minutes. Severine Uggen contributed nine of the 12 points. Jaziana Mathis tallied 26 points to help the Panthers record the win.
  • On the season, Uggen averages 21.3 with 64 points shooting a 52.1-percent from the floor. Off the glass, Aiste Vaitekunaite leads the Panthers with 7.3 rpg.
  • HISTORY: Last year, Saint Leo topped Florida Tech, 74-59 in Melbourne, Fla. Alex Button led the charge with 14 points going 5-for-8 from the field followed by Tori Lesko with 11 points. Lesko earned a game-high nine rebounds.

  • Saint Leo posted its first 100-plus points for the first time since January 2020 Tuesday night in the Bowman Center to capture the Lions' second win of season over Savannah State, 107-67.
  • Saint Leo saw 11 of 12 players score in front of the 640 attendees where Francis Sio paced the team with 22 points in 21:40 of action. The junior guard from Charlotte, N.C. went 6-of-9 from the field including a 5-for-6 night from downtown and a 5-for-6 night from the free-throw line. Wade Coomer tallied 14 points off the bench for the Green and Gold while Rob Fry II and Luke Haasl each chipped in with 12 and Jared Coomer at 10. Frank Webb Jr. fell just shy of double-digit points, and nearly another triple-double with 12 boards and seven assists.
  • On the young season, Luke Haasl and Wade Commer share a team-leading 14 points per game with 42 points each. Haasl has made 19-of-24 from the floor (.792) while adding a pair of three-pointers and free throws. Wade Coomer has hit 14-of-30 field goals, including sinking 11-of-25 beyond the arc (.440). The senior guard enters the weekend perfect at the charity stripe going 3-for-3. Joining Haasl and Wade Coomer in double-digit scoring is teammates Francis Sio (13.7), Grant Disken (12.3), and Frank Webb Jr. (11.7).
  • Off the iron, Frank Webb Jr. is just shy of a double-digit average with 9.3 rebounds per game (rpg). The senior guard from Baltimore, Maryland has grabbed 28 boards in 91 minutes of action, split almost evenly with 15 offensive and 18 defensive rebounds.
  • Florida Tech tallied its first win of the season at the NCAA South Regional Tipoff Challenge on Saturday against Benedict. The Panthers posted a 72-66 win over the Tigers. Mekhii Noble led the Crimson & Gray with a double-double on a career-high 23 points and 14 rebounds on 9-16 shooting. Meanwhile, Sesan Russell and Sean Houpt each contributed double-digit points with 18 and 13, respectively. Mate Papai finished just short of a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds.
  • After the opening weekend, Noble averages a double-double with a team-high 18 ppg game shooting a 50-percent from the field, going 14-for-28. Off the glass, he averages 12.5 rpg with seven offensive and 25 defensive rebounds. He is joined by Russell in double-digit scoring with 17.5 ppg shooting 32.4-percent going 12-for-37 from the floor.
  • HISTORY: The programs last met in the Sunshine State Conference Championship on March 18 during the tournament's semifinals. Saint Leo took care of third-seeded Florida Tech, 78-68 to advance on their way to the Championship title. Frank Webb Jr. led the offensive onslaught recording a double-double with game-high 18 points and team-high 10 rebounds. The senior shooting guard went 4-for-7 from the field, including a 2-for-2 from beyond the circle, and a perfect 8-for-8 at the charity stripe. Grant Disken added 11 points while Jared Coomer and Cantia Rahming tallied 10 points apiece. Jared Coomer helped the Lions off the glass with nine rebounds.
