Lions Ledger: Men's Soccer and Volleyball In Action at Home Tuesday; Women's Soccer Hits the Road

  • RECORDS: Saint Leo 9-15, 3-10 SSC | Eckerd 14-10, 5-8 SSC
  • Saint Leo dropped a pair of 3-1 decisions at Florida Southern and at #17 Nova Southeastern this past week. The Lions will play their next five matches at home before closing the season on the road with a pair of contests.
  • Senior Brooke Turner continues to lead the team in kills (209) and kills per set (2.79) but it was redshirt junior Elizabeth Sandoval who led the Lions this past week averaging 3.00 kills per set over the two matches. Sandoval currently ranks second on the team in total kills (176) and kills per set (2.32). Senior Anna Garrett has been running the offense from the setter position and is averaging 8.18 assists per set while senior libero Payton Bellano leads the team in digs with 4.08 per set.
  • Bellano and Garrett continue to inch up the career charts at Saint Leo. Bellano moved into fifth all-time at Saint Leo in career digs with her 24 this past week and now sits at 1,275 for her career, She needs just 59 more digs to move into a tie for fourth all-time with Christiana Florea (1999-02). Garrett has secured the second spot all-time in assists at Saint Leo with 3,797. She still sits 1,576 behind record holder Michelle Nogueras' (2006-09) 5,373 career assists.
  • Eckerd went 0-2 this past week with a 3-0 loss at #9 Tampa and a 3-1 setback at #17 Nova Southeastern. The Tritons are 5-5 over their last 10 matches this season and enter the match on a three-game losing streak.
  • Junior Joelle Coulter and freshman Ranya Mehta sit atop the Triton kills per set list with 2.58 and 2.57 kills per set, respectively. Junior Krysten Garrison is averaging a team-best 8.78 assists per set while Coulter leads the team in digs per set at 3.03. The Tritons boast a pair of student-athletes with 80-plus blocks on the season. Sophomore Anna Jungjohann leads with 88 blocks while junior Rachel Wisian has 82.
  • HISTORY: Saint Leo has won seven of the last 10 meetings between the two programs but the Tritons have won two of the last three meetings. Eckerd defeated Saint Leo 3-0 earlier this season in St. Petersburg.
  • RECORDS: Saint Leo 3-10-3, 1-6-2 SSC | Florida Southern 5-7-3, 4-4-1 SSC
  • Saint Leo will close out the 2021 season at home on Tuesday hosting the Florida Southern Moccasins. Last week, the Lions dropped a 3-1 decision to the No. 18 Lynn Fighting Knights. Josef Hefele netted his second of the season assisted by Mauro Diaz and Narl Nyman in the opening goal between the Lions and Fighting Knights. Hefele got the ball just beyond the line in a back post left side goal. He finished Diaz's cross, which was first touched by Nyman in the box.
  • Miguel Fernandez paces the Green and Gold offense with five goals followed by Diaz with a pair of goals and three assists. In goal, Joao Kozlowski got the start against Lynn, his second of the season. Riccardo Zarri has taken care of much of the goalkeeping responsibilities of the season with 11 starts and 33 saves.
  • Florida Southern returned to the win column on Wednesday at Embry-Riddle. The Mocs defeated the Eagles 2-0 with a pair of late goals, first by Santiago Erazo followed two minutes later by Christoph Gums.
  • On the season, James Meehan has led the Mocs with nine goals and two assists. He is helped by Gums with three goals and three assists. Mars Gohier has started all 15 games where he has earned 67 saves and allows only 1.22 goals per game.
  • HISTORY: The two programs last met in the 2019 season finale on Tuesday, Nov. 5. The Lions' early lead faltered against the last offensive burst by the Mocs in a 2-1 decision in Lakeland, Florida.
  • RECORDS: Saint Leo 2-11-2, 1-7-1 SSC | Florida Southern 4-8-2, 1-5-2 SSC
  • Saint Leo looks to close out the season in the win column against the Florida Southern Moccasins. The Lions last tasted victory on Saturday, Oct. 9 in an overtime thriller against Barry.
  • Nina Mueller paces the offense with three goals and a pair of assists followed by Paula Martinez Miranda with a pair of goals and an assist. In goal, Maitane Bravo has been fantastic with 81 saves in 13 games.
  • Florida Southern will celebrate its senior class before kicking things at 7:00 p.m. against the Lions. The Mocs last celebrated a win on Saturday, Oct. 2 over Lynn at home in a 3-1 decision. Last week, Florida Southern suffered a 1-0 loss at the hands of No. 23 Embry-Riddle.
  • Caitlyn Lowery has led the offense with seven goals and a pair of assists while Tatum Albrecht has been the leading play maker with four assists and a goal. In the net, Jenny Staten has earned all 14 starts with 73 saves.
  • HISTORY: The programs last met on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2019 at the Saint Leo Soccer Field when the Lions knocked off the Mocs, 2-1.
