Lions Ledger: Men's and Women's Soccer at Home during Busy Fall Week

  • RECORDS: Saint Leo 3-6-1, 1-2-0 SSC | Rollins 4-2-2, 1-1-1 SSC | Barry 3-4-1, 2-1-0 SSC
  • Saint Leo split a pair of matches this past week falling on the road at Eckerd 1-0 before trouncing Johnson University at home 5-0. The Lions are winners of three of their last four matches including a thrilling 2-1 overtime win over then No. 3 Palm Beach Atlantic on the road.
  • The Lions have a group of six at the top of the scoring chart who have all netted two goals this season including freshmen Dylan Smith, Arthur Bergami, Dorian Jackson, Luca Tiozzo, sophomore Mauro Diaz and senior Miguel Fernandez. Smith is the points leader on the squad with six including his two assists while Bergami and Diaz sit in second with five points as they each have one assist. Freshman Cameron Duncan is the assist leader as he has helped out on three goals this season.
  • Three goalkeepers have seen action in between the pipes with senior Riccardo Zarri seeing the most action at 568-plus minutes. Zarri has a 1-5 record this season and a 1.58 goals against average while tallying a team-best 17 saves. Freshman Jackson Eckley has seen 290 minutes of action with six saves and a 1.55 GAA while posting a 1-1-1 record. Sophomore Joao Kozlowski has seen 90 minutes in goal for the Lions and has a 0.00 GAA with no saves and a perfect 1-0 record.
  • Rollins is 1-1-1 over its last three contests including a 3-1 victory over Eckerd, a 1-2 setback versus No. 15 Lynn and a 2-2 tie at Florida Southern. The Tars already own a 3-0 decision over the Lions in Winter Park earlier this season in non-conference action.
  • Junior Georgios Koliniatis has been a one-man scoring machine for the Tars as he has tallied seven goals over eight matches this season. He has tallied at least one point in all eight matches as he has two assists to go along with his team-best seven scores. Two other Tars have two goals each while four others have tallied one. Senior Dominic Adomakoh is the leading assist man with three helpers so far this season. In goal, junior Maximillian Obermeier has seen all but 90 minutes of action while tallying a 3-2-2 mark with 21 saves and a 1.61 goals against average.
  • HISTORY: Rollins owns an 8-1-1 mark in the series over the last 10 meetings dating back to the 2014 season. The Lions won the most recent conference meeting between the two squads on Oct. 9, 2019 in Winter Park as the Green and Gold notched a 3-2 double overtime victory over the Tars while Rollins won the most recent meeting 3-0 in Winter Park earlier this season in non-conference action.
  • Barry enters the week having won two-straight over Florida Tech and Embry-Riddle. Both contests ended with a 3-1 score notching the first two conference wins of the season for the Buccaneers. Barry will travel to Lynn Wednesday before facing off against the Lions in Miami Shores.
  • Freshman Juan Caffaro has been the scoring leader for the Bucs as he has netted six goals with two assists including all three goals in the 3-1 win over Embry-Riddle in their most recent contest. Marlon Buck and Daniel Schaal each have two goals while five others have each netted one. Caffaro shares the team assists lead with Buck as they each have helped out on two goals this season. Barry has used three keepers this season with junior Jean Claude Consol getting the early action while tallying a team-high 391-plus minutes with a 1-3 record. He has a team-best 11 saves and a 2.07 goals against average. Freshman Nils Buecheler was in net for the Buccaneers wins over Florida Tech and Embry-Riddle. He has seen 251-plus minutes of action with seven saves, a 0.71 GAA and a 2-0-1 record.
  • HISTORY: The Lions are 5-3-2 versus the Buccaneers over the last 10 meetings dating back to the 2012 season. Saint Leo won the most recent meeting, a 2-1 victory at home over the Bucs on Oct. 12, 2019 while Barry won the most recent meeting in Miami Shores, 4-2 in 2018.

  • Saint Leo fell in its lone contest a week ago, a 1-0 overtime decision at home versus Eckerd on Wednesday. The Lions are in search of their first Sunshine State Conference victory of the season as they travel to Rollins on Wednesday and host Barry Saturday.
  • Four Lions have notched goals this season including juniors Nina Mueller, Alyssa Abernot, sophomore Bella Arato and senior Paula Martinez Miranda. Mueller leads the team in both points and assists as she has the only two assists on the season and has a total of four points for the season.
  • Two goalkeepers have seen action for the Lions with Abernot getting the early action and seeing 232-plus minutes of action. She posted a 0-1-1 record in net with nine saves and a 1.93 goals against average. Senior Maitane Bravo has seen 613-plus minutes of action while picking up 41 saves and posting a 1-6 record. She has posted a 1.91 goals against average as well.
  • Rollins enters the week having won three-straight including a pair of road contests at Lynn (4-1) and at Eckerd (2-1). Three of the Tars' four losses have come against top-25 opponents including then-No. 1 Flagler and then-No. 2 Mississippi College.
  • The Tars boast nine goal-scorers on the roster led by junior Tayla Duffy who has found the back of the net four times this season. Freshman Briyah Drayton and senior Chynna McGirt have scored three and two goals, respectively, while six others have each tallied one goal. Senior Vilja Aaltonen has a team-best three assists while Duffy leads the team with 10 points thanks to her four goals and two assists. Two goalkeepers have seen the field for the Tars with junior Noel Miller seeing the most recent action. Miller has been on the field for 317-plus minutes with 17 saves, an 0.85 goals against average and a 2-0 record.
  • HISTORY: Rollins owns a 7-2-1 mark in the series over the last 10 meetings dating back to the 2014 season. The Tars won the most recent meeting 3-1 which took place at Saint Leo on Oct. 9, 2019. The most recent contest in Winter Park ended in a 1-1 tie in 2018.
  • Barry is 2-0-1 over its last three contests including wins over Embry-Riddle and St. Thomas in Miami Shores and a 1-1 tie at Florida Tech. The Buccaneers will host Lynn Wednesday night before traveling to Saint Leo on Saturday.
  • Sophomore Tash Hudson has been the goal scorer for the Bucs as she has tallied five goals over the eight contests. Freshman Drew Dempsey has scored two goals while five others have one goal each. Hudson also shares the team lead in assists with two while Dempsey also has two. Senior Maddie Hart-Pomerantz has been the lone goalkeeper to see action on the field logging 751-plus minutes in between the pipes. She has 39 saves on the season with a 1.20 goals against average while posting a 4-3-1 record.
  • HISTORY: The Buccaneers are 8-2-0 over the last 10 meetings with the Lions dating back to the 2012 season. Barry won the most recent meeting between the two squads in 2019 in Miami Shores 2-0, while also taking a 2-0 decision in the last meeting at Saint Leo in 2018. The Lions last win in the series came in 2016 at home with a 2-1 double overtime thriller.

  • Saint Leo split a pair of matches last weekend taking down Barry on the road 3-1 before falling at Florida Tech 3-1. The two matches were the start of a five-match road swing for the Lions which continues this week with road matches at Rollins and Embry-Riddle. The Green and Gold will take on the Tars on Friday at 7 p.m. before facing the Eagles on Saturday at 4 p.m.
  • Senior Ashley Quero retook the team lead in kills (125) this week with a pair of strong performances versus Barry and Florida Tech. The Hialeah, Fla. native hit .329 for the week with 37 total kills over the two matches. Fellow senior Brooke Turner has fewer total kills (113) but is leading the team in kills per set at 2.69. Senior Payton Bellano continue to lead the team in digs (178) while averaging 3.79 per set while sophomore Margaret Schirm has been the force at the net posting a team-best 35 blocks so far this season.
  • Quero, Bellano and senior Anna Garrett are inching up the career charts at Saint Leo. Quero currently ranks fourth in the career record book at Saint Leo in kills with 1,146. She surpassed former teammate Victoria Omoregie (2016-19) and Lauren Campbell (2011-14) this past week to move up two spots. Quero needs just 53 more kills to tie for third all-time with Kristy Johnson (1996-99). Bellano currently sits just outside the top-six in career digs at Saint Leo with 1,114, She needs 124 more digs to move into sixth all-time and tie Yaidimar Santiago (2013-14). Garrett who has been splitting time with junior Skylar Singleton at setter has moved into second all-time in assists with 3,448. She still sits 1,925 behind record holder Michelle Nogueras' (2006-09) 5,373 career assists.
  • Rollins has been struggling to get back on track after going 3-1 in the opening tournament of the season. The Tars have dropped 10-straight since returning from the Steel City Showcase in Pueblo, Colo. They have won just one set in their last six matches, a 3-1 setback to Florida Tech.
  • Junior Riley Spurlin leads the squad with 141 total kills which equates to 2.94 per set. She is flanked by freshman Lana Gerard who is averaging 2.04 kills per set. Junior libero Charlie Durbin is averaging a team-best 4.08 digs per set while sophomore Emma Begley and junior Alexis Yeager have been a dynamic duo at the net averaging 0.93 and 0.86 blocks per set, respectively.
  • HISTORY: Saint Leo has won 11-straight against the Tars with the last Rollins victory in the series coming October 23, 2015 in Winter Park. The Lions and Tars met twice in the abbreviated spring season this past March and April with Saint Leo winning at Winter Park 3-1 and at home 3-0.
  • Embry-Riddle opened the 2021 season with 13-straight victories before falling 3-2 at No. 23 Nova Southeastern this past Thursday. Eight of the Eagles wins have come in 3-0 sweeps while just two have gone to five sets.
  • Freshman Jaden McBride and sophomore Cameron Gilleland are leading the Eagle offense. McBride is averaging 3.86 kills per set while Gilleland is right behind at 3.53 per set. Junior Kendyl Taylor is pacing the backline with 3.79 digs per set while junior Sam Lanning has been the stopper at the net with 82 total blocks for an average of 1.71 per set. Senior Amelia Hartnett is also averaging over a block per set at 1.22 with 61 total stops.
  • HISTORY: Embry-Riddle has won three of the last five meetings between the two programs but the Lions have won the last two meetings. The Eagles have four total wins over the Lions since they began playing a Sunshine State Conference schedule in 2015. The most recent meeting between the two programs came in the opening round of the 2019 NCAA South Regional in which the Lions downed the Eagles 3-0 in Boca Raton.
  • Saint Leo is coming off hosting the NCAA DII National Preview on Oct. 2 at the Abbey Golf Course where the Lions placed fourth in the women's 6K race and sixth in the men's 8K race.
  • Faye Dervan led the women's team with a second-place finish in her collegiate debut in a time of 21:33.1 which was the top time for all SSC runners in the race, besting Tampa's Zoe Jarvis who took third. Dervan went on to be named the Sunshine State Conference Runner of the Week after her performance.
  • Shane Bracken pace the men's team with a seventh-place finish in a time of 25:01.0 on the 8K course to finish as the top SSC runner at the race, holding off Embry-Riddle's Ryan Szklany. Bracken went on to be named the SSC Runner of the Week after his performance Saturday.

  • Saint Leo travels to Georgia to compete in its second tournament of the fall after taking 11th place at the DBU Invitational on Sept. 20-21. At the opening tournament, Pia Perthen and Cajsa Strandberg led the way with a 28th place tie at 225 (+9)
  • This will be the first time the Green and Gold has competed at the Leeann Noble Memorial, in the tournaments eight year history.
