Lions Ledger: Men's Soccer Hosts Midweek Contest while Volleyball, Swimming and Women's Soccer Hit the Road

  • RECORDS: Saint Leo 9-13, 3-8 SSC | Florida Southern 10-8, 6-5 SSC | #17 Nova Southeastern 17-2, 9-1 SSC
  • Saint Leo went 2-1 this past weekend at the South Region Crossover in Winter Haven, Fla. The Lions swept West Alabama 3-0, defeated Lee 3-1 and fell to Montevallo 3-1 all out of the Gulf South Conference.
  • Senior Brooke Turner maintained her top spot on the squad in kills as she is now averaging 2.91 per set. Senior Anna Garrett had a strong weekend at setter and upped her seasonal assist average to 8.21 per set as she dished out over 11 per set over the three matches. Senior libero Payton bellano also had her digs average tick up to 4.20 per set after averaging a tremendous 6.27 per set over the three matches at the crossover. Sophomore Margaret Schirm continues to hold the top spot on the team in blocks with 44 total for an average of 0.67 per set.
  • Bellano and Garrett continue to inch up the career charts at Saint Leo. Bellano moved into sixth all-time at Saint Leo in career digs with her 69 over the weekend and now sits at 1,251 for her career, She needs just 15 more digs to move into a tie for fifth all-time with Chelsea Armer (2006-09). Garrett has secured the second spot all-time in assists at Saint Leo with 3,742. She still sits 1,631 behind record holder Michelle Nogueras' (2006-09) 5,373 career assists.
  • Florida Southern went 1-2 at the South Region Crossover this past weekend with a 3-1 loss to Auburn Montgomery, a 3-0 setback to nationally-ranked West Florida and a 3-0 sweep of Valdosta State.
  • Sophomore Mackenzie Petermann leads the Mocs in kills with a 3.48 per set average, over 1.0 per set more than her next highest teammate. Senior libero Beatrice Formilan is averaging nearly five digs per set at 4.98 to rank first in the Sunshine State Conference while senior Tierra Porter leads the way in blocks with 56 total stops for an average of 0.82 per set.
  • HISTORY: Florida Southern won the first 60 match-ups between the programs dating from 1976 until 2008. The series has been much closer since 2008 as the Lions have gone 12-16 against Florida Southern in that span including winning three of the last five matches.
  • No. 17 Nova Southeastern went 2-1 at the South Region Crossover with a 3-0 sweep of Auburn Montgomery, a 3-1 victory over Union and a 3-1 setback to nationally-ranked West Florida.
  • Redshirt freshman Elizabeth Price leads the Sharks offensively with 3.48 kills per set while three others average over 2.3 kills per set. Redshirt freshman libero Preslee Brooksbank is averaging 4.15 digs per set on the backline while redshirt sophomore Brittany Landrum is leading the way defensively up front with 70 total blocks for an average of 1.04 per set.
  • HISTORY: Saint Leo leads the all-time series with Nova Southeastern, 30-23, and has won seven of the last 11 matches versus the Sharks. The Sharks snapped a four-match win streak by the Lions in the series in 2018. Saint Leo and Nova Southeastern split the series meetings in 2019, each winning at home while the Sharks swept the Lions earlier this season at home 3-0.

  • Saint Leo enters the week after a tough 1-0 loss to No. 9 Tampa and long 4-4 draw at Nova Southeastern. Miguel Fernandez paced the Green and Gold in Ft. Lauderdale with a pair of goals off six shots. The Spanish forward netted the team's first goal, assisted by Lucas Mastroguiseppe and third of the night, assisted by Mauro Diaz. The Green and Gold also celebrated goals by Noah Knifte, assisted by Josef Hefele and Harrison Taylor, assisted by Branddon Silva Ortiz.
  • Fernandez's two goals places him at the top of the team's offensive charts with five goals. In the net, Riccardo Zarri has earned 33 stops after facing 140 saves. He enters the week with a 0.635 save percentage and a 1.69 goals allowed average.
  • No. 18 Lynn defeated Embry-Riddle 2-0 on Saturday to record the program's 10th win. Lukas Hombach and Kyle Patton found the back of the net for the Fighting Knights.
  • Hombach and Lukas Ostermann have each contributed four goals and assist on the season. Javier Ibanez and Sinisa Sprecakovic have each compiled three goals with a pair and assist, respectively. Patrick Nettekoven has taken care of all the goalkeeping responsibilities earning 24 saves and seven shutouts.
  • HISTORY: The programs last met on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2019, when the Fighting Knights were ranked third in the nation. Lynn topped Saint Leo 4-1 in the Bobby Campbell Stadium.

  • Saint Leo looks to snap a two-game losing skid after facing Tampa and Nova Southeastern last week. Alexa Guido netted her first collegiate goal against the Spartans while Nina Mueller tallied her third of the season on Saturday.
  • Mueller has compiled three goals and two assists to pace the Green and Gold offense followed by Paula Miranda Martinez with two. Goalkeeper Maitane Bravo has continued to be stellar with 76 saves following 180 shots. The Spanish goalkeeper has earned a 0.800 save percentage and a 1.62 goals allowed average.
  • Lynn is looking to bounce back from a 1-0 loss to Embry-Riddle on Saturday. Anniina Sankoh lead's the Fighting Knights' offense with 11 goals and a pair of assists. In goal, Sofia Manner has earned 53 saves with a .716 save percentage, allowing 1.86 goals allowed average.
  • HISTORY: On Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2019 the Fighting Knights nearly defeated the Lions 1-0 at the Saint Leo Soccer Field.

  • Saint Leo opened its 2021-22 campaign this past weekend with the No. 22 women upsetting the visiting No. 19 Florida Southern Mocs 146-116 while the Saint Leo men fell to No. 10 Florida Southern 187-75.
  • Sophomore Isabelle Sering was the top Lion woman with three individual victories while also competing on a winning relay. She took the top spots in the 100 freestyle, 50 butterfly and 100 butterfly while also appearing on the winning 200 medley relay. She took the 100 free in 53.08 while going first and third with teammate Jayana Pasteur in the 50 fly. Sering finished in 25.51 while Pasteur clocked in at 27.11. The winning time I the 100 fly was 56.42. Sering was also part of the one-two finish for the Lions in the medley relay.
  • The women captured 10 of the 14 event victories on the day including three one-two finishes including in the 200 medley relay.
  • Sophomore Emma Bjoernholdt was the only other Lion with multiple individual victories as she took the top spot in the 200 freestyle and 200 individual medley while placing second in the 100 breaststroke. She touched the wall in 1:54.02 in the free and 2:07.96 in the IM. She was also part of the second place medley relay squad.
  • Sophomore Szymon Leszega was the lone individual on the men's side to take home a victory as he topped the field in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.53. The Lions' 400 freestyle relay also took home a victory as sophomore Carlos Nava, Leszega, sophomore Devin Green and senior Hampus Lovinge teamed up to post a time of 3:06.09.
  • Florida Tech opened its season at the University of North Florida Season Kickoff. The men took second while the women finished sixth.
  • Tech's first men's victory of the season happened courtesy of Daniel Aizenberg, who earned win in the 50 backstroke with a time of 23.39. Aizenberg also placed second in the 50 butterfly with a finish of 22.90 and third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.95. John Fonnotto also picked up a win in the 100 butterfly at 50.42.
  • The women's top performer was Savannah Brennan who placed second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:08.00 and third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:07.64.
  • Lynn has competed at two events so far this season. The Fighting Knights hosted Keiser University in a dual meet to open the season on Oct. 1 and then competed at the TYR Fall Classic in Miami Oct. 8-9. Both the men and women fell to Keiser in their dual meet while they both placed seventh at the Fall Classic.
  • Philip Rhodes was the lone Fighting Knight to earn an individual victory versus Keiser as he took home the top spot in the 100 freestyle. For the women, the Fighting Knights won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:54.44. Megan Gregory earned an individual win in the 200 individual medley at 2:16.28 while Olivia Flack won the 100 freestyle in 55.72.
