CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Saint Leo beach volleyball team traveled to Charleston, S.C., this weekend to compete in the CofC Creekside Beach Classic hosted by the College of Charleston. On opening day the Lions faced 18
th-ranked Georgia State for the second time this season and Mercer out of Macon, Ga. The Lions fell 5-0 to GSU while they battled with Division I Mercer falling 3-2.

In the opening match it was sophomore
Kirsten Kaiser and freshman
Skylar Singleton who posed the most points against the Panthers as they fell at No. 5 21-17, 21-12.

In the Mercer match the Lions won two of the five scoring matches as well as an exhibition match at No. 6. Kaiser and Singleton earned the first points of the day as they won at No. 5 21-16, 21-12. The Bears of Mercer took a 2-1 lead after winning at both No. 4 and No. 1 before freshmen
Michelle Cuervo and Madi Cerain tied things up with a 17-21, 21-18, 15-12 come-from-behind victory. The match came down to No. 2 where the Bears won a three-game affair 20-22, 21-10, 17-15.

The Lions also won in an extra match as freshmen
Nuvia Moncada and
Morgan Leadens took a 21-11, 21-11 against the Bears' duo.

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow as they close out play in Charleston versus Coastal Carolina, who received votes in the most recent AVCA Top-20 poll, and host College of Charleston. The matches are scheduled for 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., respectively.
