Men Take Fourth; Women Finish Sixth at SSC Championships

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's and women's swimming programs wrapped up action at the 2020 Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championships in Clearwater, Fla. The men held on to their fourth place position while the women secured sixth place.
 
The Tampa Spartans took home the crown on the men's side while the Nova Southeastern Sharks claimed the title on the women's standings. Tampa held a 143-point edge in the men's race while NSU hung on for a 24.5-point victory in the women's quest for a championship.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A total of 10 events were contested Sunday with morning preliminaries and evening finals except the 1650m which took place during the morning session.
  • The Saint Leo men earned four top-five finish including one second place and one third place finish.
  • The Lion women earned one top-five finish in the form of the sophomore Vittoria Bonsanti Feniello who took fifth in the 1650.
  • Saint Leo had a total of 16 top-16 finishers on Sunday.
 
MEN'S TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Junior Kosta Mitrovic led the way Sunday as he took second in the 200 breaststroke. The Belgrade, Serbia native posted an NCAA "B" standard time of 1:59.71.
  • The 400 free relay "A" squad took third overall in 2:59.91. Junior Fridtjov Mork along with seniors Christian Cioffi, Juan Patino and Michael Southward turned in the bronze medal performance. Freshman Devin Green, sophomore Matthew Daniel, senior Matija Rafaj and senior Bradley Hyde compiled the "B" relay and they took 13th in 3:08.75.
  • Mork broke out for an individual top-five finish as he and Southward finished in fourth and fifth, respectively in the 100 freestyle. Both Lions posted NCAA "B" standard times with Mork finishing in 44.98 and Southward stopping the clock at 45.03.
  • Daniel had a long day as he took on the 1650 freestyle in the morning while taking sixth with an NCAA "B" standard time of 15:46.39. He was joined in the top-10 by Rafaj who took 10th with a "B" standard time of 16:00.74. Both went on to compete in the 400 free relay in the evening session.   
  • Sophomore Hampus Lovinge wrapped up the Lion scorers as he took seventh in the 200 backstroke with a NCAA "B" standard time of 1:48.10.  
 
WOMEN'S TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Bonsanti Feniello once again led the way for the Lions as she took fifth in the 1650 freestyle and represented the lone top-five finisher for the Lions on Sunday. She completed the distance in 17:17.20 good for another NCAA "B" standard for the sophomore. Senior Charlie Langner earned a point for the Lions as she took 16th after stopping the clock at 18:12.03.
  • Senior Zofia Pilarska earned a top-10 finish in the 100 freestyle as she turned in a NCAA "B" standard time in the event while finishing sixth. She touched the pad in 51.77. Senior Annie Lindstrom swam in the "B" final and tied for 14th with a time of 52.76.
  • The Lions took sixth in the 400 freestyle relay as Pilarska and Lindstrom teamed up with senior Matalin Shaver and Bonsanti Feniello to stop the clock at 3:30.84. Freshman Mariana Navarrete, senior Lauren Boos, junior Paulina Majszutowicz and Langner comprised the "B" relay and they took 15th with a time of 3:40.18.
  • Majszutowicz earned the only other top-10 finish for the Lions as she placed ninth in the 200 breaststroke winning the "B" final. She posted another NCAA "B" standard time as she won the race in 2:19.62. Sophomore Carolina Walch finished three spots back in 12th at 2:21.81.

Saint Leo will await the announcement of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship invites to see who will go to Ohio to compete for an NCAA Championship.
