The Saint Leo Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) selected a non-profit organization close to its committee for its annual fundraising campaign efforts. Throughout the 2019-2020 academic year, Saint Leo SAAC will host fundraising events to benefit
A Week Away.
Saint Leo SAAC is committed to the NCAA Division II mission to build a sense of community and engage with the community off campus. Each year, SAAC sponsors donation drives to raise funds to support the work of outstanding charities in the community. This year, Saint Leo SAAC has selected to support the organization A Week Away.
A Week Away is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to finance and coordinate respite weeks for individuals and their loved ones who are dealing with life-threatening illnesses. A Week Away was founded in 2014 and since then has provided the opportunity for families to find peace and the energy needed to continue fighting their disease.
"A Week Away is an organization close to the Saint Leo Family," said Saint Leo SAAC advisor
Susan Cross. "One of our student-athletes became aware of the organization when a close family friend was a beneficiary of the week of respite. We are honored to contribute to their success and hope we can provide comfort to those searching for peace."
Saint Leo will host its first fundraising event Wednesday, Sept. 18 at Tijuana Flats in Wesley Chapel. A portion of the sales made from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. will go to Saint Leo SAAC's fundraising efforts. Saint Leo will return to Tijuana Flats on Nov. 13.
Saint Leo SAAC is made up of 44 committee members, with representation from each of the Lions' 21 varsity sports and the cheer program. The committee is assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience at their respective institutions, as well as offer input on rules, regulations, and policies in Division II. SAAC committees are represented on an institutional, conference and national level.
