Lions Ready for AVCA Small College Championship

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo beach volleyball team enters this weekend's AVCA Small College Beach Championship as the No. 6 seed among NCAA Division II programs. The Lions are scheduled to play three matches throughout the day on Friday which will lead to more pool play on Saturday before the championship is decided on Sunday.
 
Saint Leo will be joined at the tournament by No. 3 seed Tampa, No. 5 seed Florida Southern and No. 12 seed Eckerd out of the Sunshine State Conference. The Lions will be playing in Pool A on the first day with top-seeded Texas A&M Kingsville, No. 7 seed Stevenson and No. 12 seed Eckerd.
 
The day opens with a 10 a.m. match against Eckerd, a team the Lions defeated three times this season including twice at home. At 1 p.m. the Lions will face Stevenson who they defeated 4-1 at home earlier this season. The opening day will conclude with a 4 p.m. match-up with top-seeded Texas A&M Kingsville who went 13-12 during the regular season.
 
The Lions concluded the 2019 regular season with a program best eight victories to go along with 11 defeats. The Lions were led by the duo of junior Amber Lake and sophomore Nina Vattovaz who produced an 8-11 record on the year including a 5-5 mark at No. 1. Three other Lion pairs finished with seven victories on the year for a very balanced lineup.
 
Saint Leo went 2-3 at the 2018 AVCA Small College Beach Championship with wins over Lincoln Memorial and Florida Southern.
