Women’s Swimming Takes Fifth at the 2019 SSC Championships

Lions finish with 335 points

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's swimming team closed out the 2019 Sunshine State Conference Championships in fifth place with 335 points. The Lions finished ahead of both Rollins (310 pts.) and Florida Tech (280 pts.) while falling 34 points shy of fourth place Lynn who finished with 369 points.
 
Tampa held on for the championship with 976 points over the four-day event while Nova Southeastern took second with 939 points. Florida Southern rounded out the top three with 391 points.  
 
The Lions best event on day four was the 200 breast where four Lions finished among the top-16. Sophomore Paulina Majszutowicz led the way in fourth place with an NCAA "B" standard time of 2:16.70. Freshman Carolina Walch was the next to stop the clock as she took 13th in 2:24.89. Senior Sidney Martin (2:26.31) and junior Siobhan Murphy (2:27.22) finished 15th and 16th, respectively.
 
Freshman Vittoria Bonsanti Feniello cruised to a ninth place finish in the 1650 free with an NCAA "B" standard time of 17:25.27. Junior Charlie Langner finished six spots back in 15th at 17:53.88.
 
Junior Annie Lindstrom added some more points to her championship total with a 10th place finish in the 100 free as she touched in 51.93, good for another NCAA "B" standard.
 
The final two individual scorers were senior Maftuna Tuhtasinova and junior Julia Chmielewska in the 200 back. Tuhtasinova took 13th in the event after touching the wall in 2:07.28 while Chmielewska placed 16th at 2:14.80.
 
In the lone relay of the day, the 400 free, the Lions took sixth and 15th. The "A" relay of junior Zofia Pilarska, Martin, senior Karina Kolb and junior Matalin Shaver posted a sixth place time of 3:31.47. Chmielewska, senior Alyssa McNamara, freshman Lauren Boos and Bonsanti Feniello comprised the "B" relay which took 15th after stopping the clock in 3:38.98.
 
The Lions will now await the announcement of the individuals who qualified for the NCAA Championships which will take place March 13-16 in Indianapolis, Ind.
