Lions Ledger: Hoops and Volleyball in Action in Midweek

  • Saint Leo looks to open its home portion of the season on Wednesday. The trip up North was unkind to the Lions, handing the Green and Gold 0-2 week after facing Montevallo (68-65) and Clark Atlanta (62-59).
  • Alani Gallagher earned her second Sunshine State Conference (SSC) Player of the Week nod in her second-straight appearance in the weekly honor list. The junior forward showcased a double-double performance last week averaging 22.5 points per game and 12.5 rebounds per game. Gallagher shot 60-percent from the field going 15-25. She also leads the league in blocks with seven (1.8 per game).
  • Amanda Ulrich (13.5 PPG) and Alex Button (10 PPG) join Gallagher in averaging double-digit scoring.
  • Puerto Rico-Mayaguez faced Eckerd on Monday, taking a 109-57 loss to the Tritons. The decision reset the Tritons' single-game scoring record, previously set at 106. Victoria Suarez and Vianca Malve Caraballo paced the Janes offense with 11 points apiece.
  • Before heading to Saint Leo, Puerto Rico-Mayaguez will face the Rollins Tars on Tuesday in Winter Park, Fla.
  • Saint Leo enters the midweek matchup with a 3-1 record after two wins at the Saint Leo Classic. The Lions defeated Georgia College 76-52 to open the weekend behind Kyran McClure's 27 points before dominating Flagler 74-45 Sunday behind Isaiah HIls' 24 points. Yalen Reed led the team in both games in rebounds with 13 and 10, respectivley.
  • On the year, Isaiah Hill is leading the way in points per game at 17.0 (68 total points) while he has 11 assists, nine steals and 15 rebounds. Kyran McClure is second on the team in scoring at 14.8 ppg (59) while leading in assists with 13.
  • Yalen Reed is leading a group of rebounders with 37 total (9.3 per game) while averaging 9.3 points per game (37) as well. Reed leads the team with five blocks.
  • The Coomer brothers, Wade Coomer and Jared Coomer, both have 10 assists to their credit in the first year in the Green and Gold with 27 and 20 rebounds, respectively.
  • Puerto Rico-Mayaguez will come to the Marion Bowman Activities Center after playing Rollins Tuesday night. Prior to Tuesday's matchup with the Tars, the Tarzans were 0-3 with losses to Auburn-Montgomery (97-74, 11/15), Spring Hill College (100-86, 11/16), and Eckerd (113-66, 11/18).   • In the loss Monday night to the Tritons, Jeriel Torres led the Tarzans in scoring with 16 points while Cesar Ortiz added 14 and Luis Lopez 12.
  • History The two teams meet for the third time, in a series that happens every three years (2013, 2016, 2019). The Lions are 2-0 all-time having won 70-51 in 2013 and 90-53 in 2016. Malik Fuller is the lone Lion that was on the team in 2016 and will improve on his stats against the Tarzans as he scored one point, going 1-for-2 in free throws in 14 minutes of action in 2016.
  • The Lions close out the regular season Thursday night as they travel to face the Tars of Rollins College.
  • Saint Leo has won eight-straight against the Tars with the last Rollins victory in the series coming October 23, 2015 in Winter Park. Saint Leo won both matches last season by 3-0 scores and won earlier this season 3-0 at home.
  • Junior Ashley Quero recently took over the top spot for kills on the team as she now has 283 for the season, just three more than senior Anilise Fitzi. Quero is averaging a team-best 2.89 kills per set followed by Fitzi's 2.48 per set.
  • Fitzi continues to dominate at the net as she has 126 total blocks including a team-best 18 solo stops. She is also just one service ace away from being in a three-way tie for the top on the team in that category. Freshman Skylar Singleton and sophomore Payton Bellano lead the way with 36 each while Fitzi has 35.
  • The Lions have won two-straight heading into Thursday night's match and look to close out the season on a high note versus the Tars.
  • Rollins enters Thursday night's match riding a five-match losing streak that includes three five-set heartbreakers. Riley Spurlin leads the team with 327 kills (3.06 per set) while Alexis Yeager has patrolled the net in the tune of 103 total blocks (1.12 per set).
