Women’s Swimming Opens Season with Dominating Victory

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's swimming team opened up the 2019-20 season Friday afternoon as the Lions cruised past host Rollins 149-113. The Lions captured 11 of the 14 event victories on the day and were led by sophomore Vittoria Bonsanti Feniello who won three individual events on the day.
 
Bonsanti Feniello took home the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle and 1,000 freestyle titles. She won the 200 with a time of 1:56.10 as senior Matalin Shaver took second in the race at 1:57.50. Bonsanti Feniello then won the 500 with a time if 5:10.78 before stopping the clock in the 1,000 at 10:35.54 to claim the top honor. On the day the sophomore swam over a mile in the pool while claiming three victories.
 
Senior Annie Lindstrom brought home two event victories and nearly captured a "B" standard in the 50 freestyle. Lindstrom missed out on the "B" standard by just one one-hundredth of a second at 24.04. She then won the 50 butterfly as she led a podium sweep in the event. Lindstrom turned in a time of 26.10 followed by freshman Mariana Navarrete who touched in second at 26.27. Senior Zofia Pilarska rounded out the top three at 26.57.
 
The only other multiple individual champion was returning NCAA qualifier Paulina Majszutowicz who won the 50 breaststroke and the 100 breaststroke. The junior touched in 31.04 in the 50 and 1:07.49 in the 100.
 
Navarrete captured her own gold in the 100 individual medley as she led the race at 59.83. Fellow freshman Andrea Toledano took second in the race with a time of 1:01.61.
 
Toledano earned a victory in the 50 backstroke as she topped the field in 28.43.
 
Pilarska, who was part of the sweep in the 50 fly took home the top spot in the 100 freestyle as she touched in 53.75. She was followed by Shaver who took second at 54.30.
Navarrete, Majszutowicz, Pilarska and Lindstrom teamed up to win the 200 medley relay to open the meet as the quartet turned in a time of 1:48.35.
 
The Lions will be back in action tomorrow, November 2 at 11 a.m. as they travel to Florida Southern to take on their originally planned season opener.
