#19 Men’s Swimming Dominant in Season Opener

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's swimming team returned to the pool Friday afternoon to open its 2019-20 season on the road at Rollins. The Lions put on a dominating performance as they topped the Tars 165-97. The Lions won all but two events on the day and saw several strong performances.
 
Sophomore Hampus Lovinge took home three individual titles and was part of one winning relay. The Norrkoping, Sweden native opened the day by teaming up with junior transfer Kosta Mitrovic, senior Christian Cioffi and senior transfer Juan Patino in the 200 medley relay to take home the gold in 1:35.39. Lovinge then went on to win the 50 backstroke with a time of 23.81. His next win came in a one-two finish in the 100 backstroke as he took first at 51.66 followed by freshman Devin Green who took second after touching the wall in 54.56. The final victory of the day for Lovinge was in the 100 individual medley as he outpaced the field with a time of 53.30.
 
The Lions had three others win a pair of individual events. Graduate student Yann Corbel started things up with a win in the 1,000 freestyle as he stopped the clock at 9:46.05. he then went on to win the 500 free in a one-two finish for the Lions. Corbel turned in a time of 4:42.28 while senior Matija Rafaj took second at 4:47.85.
 
Mitrovic had a strong Saint Leo debut as he won the 50 breaststroke in 26.87 followed by senior Michael Southward who took second at 28.09. Mitrovic then went on to win the 100 breast after touching the wall in 58.87.
 
Junior Fridtjov Mork was the final double winner as he won both the 50 and 100 freestyle. Mork led the way in the 50 with a time of 21.60 while Cioffi took second at 21.86. Mork the won the 100 in 47.12.
 
Green picked up an individual win in his collegiate debut as he topped the field in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:41.80.
 
Patino, Cioffi, Mork and Southward teamed up for the Lions to close out the meet with a win in the 200 freestyle relay as the team turned in a time of 1:25.80.
 
The Lions will be back in action tomorrow, November 2 at 11 a.m. as they travel to Florida Southern to take on their originally planned season opener.
