SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo softball held steady at No. 5 in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Coaches' Poll announced Wednesday, where the Green and Gold received one first-place vote. The Lions were the fifth-ranked team a week ago and posted a 3-0 week with a sweep of Sunshine State Conference foe Barry.
Saint Leo (31-7, 12-3 SSC) went 3-0 to move over the 30 win mark for the third consecutive season where they sit atop the SSC standings. The Lions defeated the Buccaneers 3-1, 1-0 and 3-0 with a walk-off hit-by-pitch in game one of the series. Stephanie Adkins, the SSC Pitcher of the Week, posted a 2-0 week in the circle to move to 17-3 on the year.
Alison Mitts pitched a complete game shutout in game two of the series to team up with Adkins for the 3-0 week in the circle for the Green and Gold.
Over the SSC series, Saint Leo saw Samantha Ohmie go 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI while hitting one home run and a double. Ohmie walked six times and was hit by a pitch twice to end the weekend with a .909-on-base percentage and a 2.000-slugging percentage. Danielle Bottley, Kacie Kelly, and Ciera Schumaker joined Ohmie in averages higher than .500 as Ohmie led the team with a .667. Bottley was second at .571 (4-7), Kelly was third at .545 (6-11) as Schumaker was right at .500 (4-8). Ohmie, Kelly, Schumaker and Bottley all were credited with the Lions' seven runs scored while Ohmie, Sarah Pauscher, Brittany Creamer and Michelle George were all responsible for the team's RBI.
Tampa joins Saint Leo as the only other Sunshine State Conference school in the NFCA Division II Top-25 Coaches' Poll, falling in at No. 16, for the second straight week.
Saint Leo is playing at Florida Tech for a midweek series with a doubleheader scheduled for Wednesday at 11 a.m. and a single game rescheduled for Thursday, April 6 at 12 p.m.
