Baseball upended by Barry in SSC twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Saint Leo baseball got a pair of solid pitching performances from Jordan Pendleton and Blake Bodin, but struggled to generate runs and dropped both ends of a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader at Barry University on Friday. The Lions fell to the Buccaneers, 4-3, in game one, and dropped a 4-1 decision in the nightcap.

Pendleton held the Buccaneers to just three earned runs with seven strikeouts over 7 2/3 innings in the day's first game, throwing 79 of his 134 pitches for strikes. Bodin was even more efficient in a long relief role in game two, pitching seven scoreless innings and scattering four hits with four strikeouts, with 52 of his 76 pitches going for strikes.

Saint Leo fell to 18-20 overall, 3-12 in the SSC, with the twinbill losses, while Barry improved to 19-22, 5-9 SSC. The Lions return to Thomas B. Southard Stadium next weekend when they host Florida Tech for a three-game series on Friday, April 21, and Saturday, April 22.

GAME 1

Saint Leo took a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning, thanks to back-to-back singles by Zach Scott and Dylan Harris. A Barry error on the Harris base hit allowed Scott to score and Harris to advance to third; Harris then crossed on Alex Mata's ground out to short.

Barry knotted the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth with Andrew Rapoza's RBI single to left center. The Lions threatened to regain the lead in the top of the eighth, but Scott was thrown out at home while trying to score from first on Harris' one-out double.

The Buccaneers scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the home half of the eighth on Julian Abreu's two-out single through the left side to score Juan Dayoub.

Harris finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored, while Mata logged two runs batted in with one hit. Scott tallied two hits in the game. The Lions, who recorded eight hits on the day, left three runners stranded.

Starter Jordan Pendleton lasted 7 2/3 innings, fanning seven Buc batters while allowing three earned runs.

GAME 2

Barry grabbed a quick lead in the second game of Friday's doubleheader. The Bucs plated one run in the first inning, then manufactured three more runs in the second on three hits and two walks, while taking advantage of a pair of Saint Leo errors.

The Lions got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning. Scott strokes a two-out double into left center, moved to third on a base hit off the bat of Matt McGee, and scored on Derek Gibree's base hit to right field.

Saint Leo threatened to add to their run total in the eighth inning, after Harris reached on a Barry fielding error at shortstop to open the inning. That was followed up by a Mata single, and Brett Coffel sacrificed both runners into scoring position with only one out. Barry pitcher Armando Gonzalez induced a fly out to left and a ground out to short, getting the Buccaneers out of the frame.

The Lions had their run-saving defensive gem in the bottom of the sixth. Barry's Rapoza attempted to score from first base on Michael Escarra's double down the left field line, but was gunned down at the plate on a 7-5-2 putout.

Gibree finished the game with a pair of hits and one RBI, with the Lions' remaining five hits distributed equally. Blake Bodin fanned four Buccaneer batters and scattered four hits over seven innings of relief work. Starter Eoin McAvinchey was charged with the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits.
