Gordillo's complete game effort leads baseball past Tars, 12-3

Box Score

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo junior Oscar Gordillo went the distance and fanned eight Rollins College batters while leading the Lions to a 12-3 win over the visiting Tars, Thursday afternoon at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.

Gordillo scattered eight hits and did not allow more than two hits in any inning. He held the Tars to three-up, three-down in each of the first four innings. Gordillo got some defensive help in the third inning with an unconventional 4-3-4 double play to end the frame, after allowing a leadoff single – the only hit he allowed through the first four.

The run support came in bunches for Gordillo, starting with three Saint Leo runs in the first inning on two hits and a Rollins error.

The Lions tacked on two more runs in the third, again taking advantage of a two-out error committed by the Rollins shortstop that allowed Chase Turner to get aboard. That was followed up by Shane Williams' double to right field, plating Turner. Senior Mike Mann had an infield single to short and the throw to first was off the mark, allowing Williams to cross for the second Lion run of the inning.

Two more Saint Leo runs crossed in the fifth, extending its lead to 7-2. An RBI single by Derek Gibree allowed Mann to score, and Zach Scott crossed for run number seven on a balk later in the inning.

Saint Leo exploded for five runs in the sixth on six hits, putting the cap on the scoring. Sophomore Brett Coffel and senior Alex Mata had leadoff singles in the sixth, with Coffel later scoring on Williams' grounder to third and Mata crossing on a wild pitch. Scott's triple to right center plated Mann, who reached on a walk earlier in the inning. Lane Stancil singled up the middle to bring home Scott, and Dylan Harris' base hit through the left side drove in Gibree who also reached on a walk.

Coffel finished the day 3-for-4 at the plate, while Stancil and Gibree each had two hits. Williams tallied two RBI.

For Rollins, eight different players recorded the Tars' eight hits. Starter James Doherty was charged with the loss after yielding five runs, three earned, on five hits over his three innings of work.

After splitting their two-game series at Southard Stadium, Saint Leo and Rollins will travel to Winter Park, Fla., for a three-game SSC series beginning on Friday, March 17. First pitch in Friday's game at Alfond Stadium starts at 1:00 p.m.
