#15 Men's Lacrosse tops Ala.-Huntsville, 21-3

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's lacrosse team dominated on Tuesday evening as they topped visiting Alabama-Huntsville, 21-3, in non-conference action at University Turf Stadium.

The Lions saw their two leading point scorers on the season have extremely productive days on the turf as junior Kyle Pauwels and Jake Gilmour were unstoppable. Pauwels, who now has 31 goals on the season, finished the day with six scores, while Gilmour, who has 42 points with 19 goals and 23 assists, finished with two goals and six assists.

Saint Leo also saw excellent play from its defense, led by their goalkeepers. Starting keeper Thomas Tatarian finished with 12 saves, and a .857 save percentage, while freshman Ian Areford, who played the whole fourth quarter, made four saves, including an incredible one-on-one stop. The Lions caused nine turnovers and picked up 41 ground balls.

How it happened
1Q | Saint Leo opened up strong in the first quarter, winning five of their seven face off attempts to gain possession. The Lions went on 6-0 run to open the quarter with Pauwels recording a hat trick, Zach Lysyk added two goals, while Charlie Kurtenbach rounded out the scoring. Kurtenbach added an assist as well, while Gilmour dished out three dimes in the opening period. Tatarian finished with six saves in the opening period to keep the Chargers off the board. | Saint Leo 6-0

2Q | Gilmour would keep the foot on the pedal for the Lions as the attackman gave the Lions their first goals of the second quarter and then dished the rock to freshman Matt Shand to make it 8-0. Anthony Visintin would add an unassisted rip, and Gilmour would find Pauwels again to make it 10-0 before the Chargers would get on the board. The quarter would close out with Gilmour finding Pauwels and Gilmour tallying his second of the game. | Saint Leo 12-1

3Q | Pauwels scored his sixth goal of the game to open the second half off a pass from Shand. Devin Sparks added another, and a snipe from Bruce Preeschl made it 15-1 before the Chargers would sneak in their second score. Matt Scharr would find Daniel Sparks for the score with a minute left to play, and on the following face, Rob Cavanaugh would grab the ground ball and pass off the rock to Jason D'Aoust for the 17th Lions' goal. Charlie Kurtenbach would find Philip Buque with just .03 on the clock for another Green & Gold goal. | Saint Leo 18-2

4Q | The Chargers would open the final quarter of action with a man-up goal with 12:44 left to play, but Jeffrey Heim would find Nick Argitis for another goal for the Lions. Daniel Sparks would add his second of the game at the 10:04 mark, and Argitis would close things out for the Lions with his second goal of the game. Ian Areford made four saves in the period, and the Lions won five of six faceoff attempts. | Saint Leo 21-3

Points to note

  • Jeffrey Heim recorded his first career point on an assist to Nick Argitis.
  • Argitis finished with two goals for his first multi-goal game of his career.
  • Saint Leo went 18-26 on the face, with Austin DiPietro going seven of 10. 
  • Gilmour is now tied for fourth all-time in career points with 142. He is tied with Kyle Marceau (2008-10).
