SAINT LEO, Fla. – With a 5-2 win in the 2016 NCAA South Regional 1 final on Tuesday afternoon, the Saint Leo women's tennis will be heading to Denver as one of the final 16 teams left in Division II.
Saint Leo opened the match with a 3-0 lead after a dominating doubles performance.
The Lions saw junior Marine Beugre-Guyot and senior Pauline Helgesson team up at No. 3's to take the first point with an 8-4 win over Sarai Flores and Valeria Mantilla.
Natalia Siedliska and Coralie Pesenti followed with an 8-5 win at No. 2's over Katerina Dikosavljevic and Dianna Vlad.
The third point came from Isabella Robbiani and Anastasia Wagner, who earned the No. 1 doubles point in a battle with the No. 21 ranked Paula Lopez and Nina Bubelova, winning 8-6.
West Florida made things interesting as they opened up singles with back-to-back wins in the No. 5 and 6 matches.
Vlad gave the Argos their first point with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Pesenti, and Heather Mixon followed with a win at No. 6 with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Madeleine Gauthier.
Saint Leo saw Beugre-Guyot earn a come-back win after dropping her first set, 6-1. She rebounded with a 6-2 win in her second to bring it to even. In her third set, Beugre-Guyot came out firing, and won the set and the point, 6-2.
With the Lions up 4-2, the deciding point was looking to come down to either Robbiani on No. 1's or Helgesson on No. 4's.
It was Robbiani who was able to close out her match first and give the Lion's their clinching point. After taking a tight first set, 7-5, the senior came out and put on a show in her second set, winning 6-1.
The Lions are headed back to the NCAA round of 16 after making their first appearance in the 2014 season.
