SAINT LEO, Fla. – The No. 3 Saint Leo women's tennis team upset No. 2 Barry, 6-3, in Sunshine State Conference action on Saturday morning, to earn the program's first ever win over the Buccaneers.
Saint Leo jumped to an early 2-1 lead after doubles. Barry actually opened with a 1-0 lead taking the No. 2 singles spot, 8-3.
The Lions responded to take the No. 1 and 3 pairings. The No. 9 national doubles pairing of Natalia Siedliska and Anastasia Wagner topped the No. 22 pairing of Zuza Maciejewska and Emma Onila, 8-5. Pauline Helgesson and Marine Beugre-Guyot added an 8-5 win as well.
In singles, Isabella Robbiani added the third point for the Lions as Maciejewska retired through the first set. Helgesson made it a 4-1 lead with a 6-1, 6-0 domination at No. 6 singles.
Barry added their second point on a 7-6, 6-1 win in the No. 5 spot.
However, Beugre-Guyot sealed the win for Lions in upset fashion as the No. 39 individual took the No. 4 spot over No.11 Sonja Larson, 6-4, 7-5.
Saint Leo dropped the No. 1 singles to give the game a 5-3 score before Wagner took the No. 4 singles over No. 21 Ana Pain, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
The Lions return to action on Wednesday, April 13 versus Florida Southern at 3 p.m.
