TAMPA, Fla. – Stephanie Adkins throws her third no-hitter as No. 4 Saint Leo took down host Tampa 4-0 on Friday, April 8th to open the three-game series up at Naimoli Family Softball Field.
With the victory, the Lions improve to 32-1 and 15-1 SSC and extend their win streak to 18 straight games, tying the longest win streak in a single season. Tampa falls to 13-15 and 5-8 SSC on the year.
A perfect-game bid was for not as Stephanie Adkins, who sits at 15-1 on the year after her complete game victory, walked one batter in the fifth inning with one out. The complete game was her 11th of the year where the shutout was the eighth of the year. Adkins finished with no hits, no runs, one walk and eight strikeouts.
Rachael Heath led the offensive charge going 2-for-4 from the plate with one run scored.Tiffany Thompson, Brittany Creamer and Bailey McKenna were the three Lions' charged with driving in the runs on the night.
Saint Leo jumped on the board quick with two runs in the first inning as Rachael Heath got things started with a bunt single. Heath would then steal second and come around to score after a single by Brooke Samios-Uy and a fielder's choice for Ciera Schumaker. Samios-Uy would be the final run of the inning as she came in as Samantha Ohmie got hit-by-the-pitch with the bases loaded.
The Lions tacked on two more in the top of the fourth as Michelle George got things started, reaching on an error by the center fielder, which allowed George to cruise into second. An error by the Spartans third baseman allowed Ohmie to reach base and bringing in George. Sommer Pollard would reach base on a fielder's choice and steal second before coming in on a single by Tiffany Thompson.
Adkins came into the bottom of the seventh and shut the door to finish off the Spartans.
