SAINT LEO, Fla. – The No. 2 Saint Leo men's tennis team took down No. 7 Barry, 6-3, for the first time in school history on Friday afternoon. Saint Leo moved to 15-1, 4-0 in Sunshine State Conference play.
The Lions jumped to a 2-1 lead after doubles behind an exciting match at the No. 1 spot.
The No. 2 doubles team in the nation in Alberto Barroso-Campos and Alex Theiler took down the No. 4 pairing in Ahmed Triki and Renato Lombardi, 9-8 (7-3), in exciting fashion to end doubles play.
The Lions got their first doubles point as Egor Panyushkin and Jaime Bueno dominated No. 2 doubles, 8-2. Barry earned their first point of the day in No. 3 slot.
In singles play, Panyushkin came from behind in his first set, to earn the point with a 6-4, 6-0 win to make the match, 3-1.
Barry brought the match to 3-2 with a win in the No. 6 singles before Guillaume Vanelven won the No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-4, to give the Lions a 4-2 lead.
Bueno sealed the match for the second-straight outing, taking No. 4 slot, 6-4, 6-3.
Saint Leo snagged the sixth point as Theiler won 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. Barry finalized the score as a battle at No. 1 singles fell in the Bucs way.
The Lions return to action on Sunday, April 10 as they take on No. 5 Lander at 10 a.m.
