TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 2 Saint Leo women's tennis team fell in a marathon match on Friday morning, dropping the Sunshine State Conference Tournament semifinal, 5-4, to No. 6 Barry University.
The Lions, who entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed after winning the regular season, opened up the match with a 2-1 lead after doubles play.
Barry jumped to a 1-0 lead after taking the No. 2 doubles match, 8-2. But Saint Leo rebounded to take both No. 1 and 3. Anastasia Wagner and Isabella Robbiani teamed up at No.1's to take down Sonja Larsen and Barbora Kijosova, 8-5. Marine Beugre-Guyot and Pauline Helgesson took down Zuza Maciejewska and Judith Bohnenkamp, 8-5, at No. 3's.
In singles play, Barry took No. 1 singles to even the score up, as Emma Onila, the nation's No.3 singles player, took down Robbiani, the No. 10 singles player in the nation, 6-2, 6-1.
The Lions took back the lead, 3-2, with a win at No. 6 as Madeleine Gauthier took down Alisa Rudenko, 6-0, 6-4.
Barry again brought the score back to even, 3-3, with a win at No. 2's. Beurge-Guyot, the nation's No. 16, fell to Maciejewska, the nation's No. 15, 6-2, 6-2.
With a win by Coralie Pesenti at No. 5's, the Lions jumped back to a 4-3 lead. Pesenti topped Kijasova, 6-2, 6-4.
Once again, Barry evened it back up with a win at No. 3's. The Bucs' Sonja Larsen took down Wagner, 7-5, 6-2.
It came down to the No. 4 match between Helgesson and Ana Pain. Helgesson took the first set, 6-3, but Pain took the second, 6-2. The final set was won by Pain, 6-3, giving Barry the win.
Saint Leo will find out it's NCAA fate on Tuesday, May 3, at 8:30 p.m. when the NCAA Committee releases the Regional pairings.
