FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 3 Saint Leo women's tennis team took down No. 7 Nova Southeastern, 6-3, to finish Sunshine State Conference action undefeated at 8-0, and move to 18-1 overall.
The SSC regular season champion has only been named since the 2014 season, but for the first time in school history, Saint Leo earned a women's tennis title in either the regular season or the tournament championship.
The Lions opened up doubles play up 2-1, winning both the No. 1 and 3 singles, and the Sharks earned a point at No. 2 doubles to open the match. Natalia Siedliska and Anastasia Wagner took No. 1's, 8-5, and Pauline Helgesson and Marine Beugre-Guyot added an 8-4 win at No. 3's.
The team's split the first points of singles as Isabella Robbiani won 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, while the Sharks took No. 6 singles. The Sharks then evened the match at three-all with a win at No. 1 singles.
Helgesson gave the lead back to the Lions with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles, and a win by Wagner at No. 4's gave the Lions the win. Wagner won 6-3, 6-3.
The match finished out as Beugre-Guyot played an extended match, winning the first set, 6-1, then falling 2-6, and closed the match with a 6-4 win.
The Lions head to Embry-Riddle on Tuesday, April 19 for a 4 p.m. match.
