SAINT LEO, Fla. - In exciting fashion, the No. 3 Saint Leo women tennis team took down the reigning National Champions and current No. 1 team in Armstrong State, 5-4, on senior Pauline Helgesson's win.
In the No. 6 singles slot, Helgesson took down ASU's Lena Pacholski, 6-0, 6-2 to seal the game.
The Lions opened up the match taking a 2-1 lead following the doubles action despite Armstrong State opening with a win in the No. 2 doubles. However, Helgesson teamed with Marine Beugre-Guyot to take down Nicole Fossa Huergo and Pacholski, 8-5. While Natalia Siedliska and Anastasia Wagner took down Lena Lutzeier and Diana Stomlega in a fight, 9-8(5).
Isabella Robbiani gave the Lions a 3-1 lead after taking down Stomlega, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 3 spot, before the Pirates would even up the match score at 3-all with wins in the No. 2 and 4 slots.
Siedliska would take the game in an exciting fight, topping Fossa Huergo, 7-5, 7-5, before a ASU win in the No. 5 position would once again tie the match.
It was down to Helgesson's match, and the senior showed her grit and helped the Lions down the No. 1 Pirates.
The Lions turn-around quick as they head to Eckerd on Sunday for an 11 AM match.
