ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – No. 11 nationally-ranked Saint Leo softball team dropped their first game of the year at Eckerd 2-1 on Saturday, March 5th at Turley Athletic Complex in the first game of the three game series.
The Lions fall to 14-1, 3-1 SSC on the year, as Eckerd improves to 12-5-1, 1-0 SSC. Stephanie Adkins picks up her first loss of the season in the circle for Saint Leo as she struck out six batters while giving up just three hits and two runs.
With the loss, Saint Leo's 25 game win streak came to an end as their 14-0 start to the season marks the second best start to a season before today's loss.
All of Saint Leo's offensive came from the one, two spots in the batting order as Tiffany Thompson went 2-for-3 from the plate as Rachael Heath went 1-for-1. Sommer Pollard was responsible for the Lions' lone run on the night.
In the bottom of the sixth, Pollard reached first on an error by the shortstop before Thompson laid down a bunt as both reached bases safely. With no outs, and two on in the bottom of the 6th, Heath laid down a sacrifice to the pitcher to advance Pollard and Thompson over with one out.
Brooke Samios-Uy stepped up to the plate and delivered a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Pollard.
Eckerd returned in the bottom of the sixth with two runs as Nikole Van Gennep knocked in the tying run before Kaleigh Floyd hit a pinch-hit game winning single in the bottom of the sixth.
