Box Score 2 DAVIE, Fla. – Saint Leo University baseball allowed 16 runs on 17 hits and fell in both ends of its Sunshine State Conference doubleheader against Nova Southeastern, Friday evening at the NSU Baseball Complex.
The Lions fell to the Sharks, 10-1, in the day's marathon opening game, which started at 1:00 p.m. and lasted just over seven hours thanks to rain and lightning delays. Saint Leo then dropped a 6-1 decision to Nova Southeastern in game two, which did not start until 8:30 p.m.
In game one, Nova Southeastern put up six runs in the first inning, and added insurance runs in the fifth and seventh to seal the win.
Brandon Gomez plated the Sharks' first two runs of the first inning on a two-run single to left center, and Jake Anchia added two more later in the frame on a two-run home run to left field.
Zach Daley got one run back for Saint Leo in the fourth inning, when his base hit up the middle drove in Troy Sieber.
However NSU added its single run in the fifth on a Daniel Zardon homer, and put three more across in the seventh on two hits and one Saint Leo error.
The Lions and the Sharks each had eight hits in game one, with Sieber and Alex Mata each going 2-for-4. Shane Haight took the loss for Saint Leo, falling to 3-1 overall.
In the day's second game, Nova Southeastern again put multiple runs on the board in the first inning and extended its lead from there to get the win.
A three-run first inning for the Sharks was keyed by Kevin Suarez's two-run triple to right, and NSU added a single run in the third for a 4-0 lead.
The Lions got on the board in the fifth with some small ball. Derek Gibree opened the inning with a bunt single back to the pitcher, and promptly stole second. Lane Stancil reached on a fielder's choice grounder to short, sending Gibree to third, and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. The next batter, Chase Turner, plated Gibree on a groundout to first. Sieber reached on a hit-by-pitch to get two runners aboard, but the Lions were unable to plate any additional runs.
Nova Southeastern responded in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run by Andres Visbal, giving the Sharks a 5-1 advantage. Gomez singled home a final NSU run in the sixth, with a base hit through the right side to score Sebastian Diaz.
Andrew Cohen got the start for the Lions, and allowed six runs, five earned, in the loss. Five different Saint Leo players each had one hit in the game.
