Saint Leo falls to #13 Dowling, 14-7

SAINT LEO, Fla. The Saint Leo women's lacrosse team took on No. 13 Dowling on Wednesday afternoon at University Turf Stadium, falling by a final score of 14-7.

Abbie Ross led Saint Leo with a hat-trick on just four shots. Four other Lions tallied a goal including, Kelsey Burns, Kaylah Walstad, Allie Sheftall and Neely Regan.

Defensively, the Lions caused 13 turnovers, led by Burns and Amanda Coppolo, who each caused three. Rebecca Halley recorded eight saves in net.

How It Happened 
1H | In the first 12 minutes, the visiting Golden Lions scored five unanswered goals to take the quick lead. Burns found the back of the net first for Saint Leo, halting the Dowling run, and got a point on the board for the Green and Gold. Dowling snuck another one in to keep the five-goal lead until Ross netted two in a row to cut the gap in half. The Golden Lions added a fast-break goal to increase their lead. Regan followed up with an unassisted strike to the back of the net, making the game 7-4 in Dowling's favor. The visitor responded with a quick-play goal, but Sheftall answered with a speedy spin shot to give the Lions a goal before the end of the first period. |Dowling 5-8|

2H | Saint Leo started the scoring in the second half as Burns dished one out to Walstad, just two minutes into the period. Dowling took control and went on a 6-0 run over a 20-minute span in the second half. Ross added the Lions' last goal on a free-position attempt to finalize the non-conference match-up. The Lions saw their draw control play improve in the second half, winning seven of nine attempts. Saint Leo also picked up 13 ground balls in the half, three more than the visitors. |Dowling 14-7|
