#7 Lions dominate #4 West Florida for huge regional win

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's tennis team upset another ITA Division II Top-10 opponent on Tuesday afternoon, topping regional foe No. 4 West Florida for the first time ever, winning 7-2.

The Argos opened the match with an 8-5 win in the No. 3 slot, but the Lions responded to the challenge.

The pairing of Alex Theiler and Alberto Barroso-Campos, who entered the spring as the No. 7 doubles duo, proved to be top-notch on Tuesday, as the twosome took down the No. 5-nationally ranked and previously undefeated pairing of Alex Peyrot and Kenny Brasil, 8-4. The combo of Theiler and Barroso-Campos is now 10-0 to open the season.

The Lions added another point as Francisco Aparicio and Fons Verberne too down Pedro Roese and Juan Pablo Boada, 8-6, in the No. 2 spot.

In singles play, Barroso-Campos, the nation's No. 3 singles player, started things off, giving the Lions their third point, topping No.11 individual in Peyrot, 6-4, 6-1.

Egor Panyushkin followed, coming from behind to snag the point for the Lions. After falling 3-6, Panyushkin found his inner strength, winning 6-0, 6-2 over the final two sets, to give the Lions a 4-1 lead.

Jaime Bueno sealed the match for Saint Leo as he too came from behind for the win. Following a 2-6 loss in the opening set, Bueno fired up and took the next two, 6-0, 6-2.

West Florida snagged a point in the No. 2 singles, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (11).

The Lions closed out the match, earning points in both No. 5 and 6 singles. Aparicio earned a 6-4, 6-4 win, while Elliot Carnello fought out a 7-6 (6), 6-4 win to finalize the match for the Lions.

The Lions return to action as the head to Denver, Colo., the site of the 2016 DII NCAA Championships, for a three-game road trip, opening on March 18 versus Metro State.
