SAINT LEO, Fla.- The No. 15 Saint Leo men's lacrosse team continued its winning ways on Tuesday evening as the Lions picked up their fifth-straight W, topping a pesky Colorado Mesa squad, 9-7.
Senior keeper Dave Moore was exceptional on the evening, recording 20 saves. His 20 saves gave him a total of 549 career saves, marking him as the all-time career saves leader in Saint Leo history.
Also making his mark on history was senior Dylan Yonts. Yonts tallied four goals on the evening adding two assists as well. Yonts' fourth goal was his 100th career goal, making him just one of four to reach the feat in Saint Leo history.
The Basics
Final Score: Saint Leo 9 | Colorado Mesa
Location: University Turf Stadium | Saint Leo, Fla.
Records: Saint Leo 6-1 | Colorado Mesa 1-3
1Q | Colorado Mesa opened up the game on its only goal of the period, finding the back of the net on a man-up opportunity. The Lions returned the favor on a fast-break successful clear attempt that ended in Yonts' stick. Yonts threw the pass down the field to meet a streaking Matt Scharr, who slammed one in to the top corner. Yonts followed with his first score of the game on a man-up attempt from the side of the arc with 10 seconds left to give the Lions their first lead. | Saint Leo 2-1 |
2Q | The Mavericks again found the back of the net first, but the Lions responded with five un-answered to close the half. Freshman Peter Bashar ignited the Lions rally when he circled the net and slide it in under the crossbar. Gilmour then found a flashing Yonts down the middle to make it a two-goal lead, and the two paired up again, on almost the same exact play, to add another mark on the board. Yonts netted his third-straight goal, fourth of the game for his 100th goal of his career assisted by his fellow senior, Chad Marino. Gilmour decided to get a goal of his own as he flicked one in on a pass across the face of the goal from Scharr. | Saint Leo 7-2 |
3Q | It was a near dreadful quarter for the Lion, who were held scoreless in the third. It was a slow come-back as the Mavericks netted goals slowly, but surely. All four of the goals were unassisted, and neither the Lions defense nor offense had an answer. CMU out-shot the Lions, 13-9 in the period, and the game was back within one. | Saint Leo 7-6 |
4Q | The Mavericks netted their fifth-straight goal over the third and fourth periods to tie the game at the 10:34 mark in the fourth. However, the Lions offense found Scharr with the ball, dodging defenders behind the back of the cage. Finding an opening, Scharr zipped the ball to Gilmour who slammed home the eventual game winner. Scharr decided to add one of his own as CMU turned it over mid-field, and in fast-break for, Yonts found Scharr to net the cushioning goal. The Mavericks continued to fight, but a decisive turnover with 2:41 left was the ultimate final moment it the game. On a clear attempt, CMU's middie scrambled around mid-field, but Yonts had enough, smacking the ball out of the middie's stick, halting their attack, and deflating the Mavericks sail. | Saint Leo 9-7 |
