SAINT LEO, Fla. – No. 11 Saint Leo opened the weekend play with a 6-0 win over Lynn on Friday, March 11th at University Softball Stadium to move to 19-1 on the year and 6-1 in Sunshine State Conference play.
Stephanie Adkins was the winning pitcher for Saint Leo as she threw the complete game giving up just one hit to the Knights' batters. Adkins finished with one walk and seven strikeouts in the 23 batters faced. Adkins improved to 8-1 on the year after the victory.
In the batter's box, Danielle Bottley went 1-for-1 on the night followed by Sommer Pollard who went 1-for-2. Ciera Schumaker and Brittany Creamer both finished the day at 2-for-3. Bottley, Pollard and Schumaker all scored one run as Creamer was credited in scoring two runs. Pollard led the count in runs batted in with two in the game.
Lynn falls to 9-16-1 and 1-5-1 SSC on the year after the loss.
The Lions scored three runs in the bottom of the second and the bottom of the sixth. In the bottom of second, Ciera Schumaker led off with a single before Stephanie Adkins moved her over with a sacrifice bunt. Brittany Creamer singled with one out moving Schumaker over, to put runners on the corners.
Danielle Bottley stepped up to bat and walked loading the bases with two outs. Sommer Pollard followed Bottley with a walk to push the first run across the plate for Saint Leo. A Fighting Knights' wild pitch would score Creamer from third and moved the runners to second and third with two outs. Another single in the inning would score the final run of the inning as Tiffany Thompson hit a single to the pitcher allowing Bottley to score.
Saint Leo scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth as Creamer, Samantha Ohmie and Pollard all scored for the Lions. Creamer led off with a double to left field, followed by an Ohmie walk. A passed ball would move both runners into scoring position with no outs in the bottom of the inning.
Bottley walked once again to load the bases with no outs. Pollard came up to bat and hit a no out single scoring Creamer. Thompson reached on a fielder's choice on a ball that went to left fielder which allowed Ohmie to score, but Bottley was out at third. Rachael Heath would drive in the final run after grounding out to the shortstop bringing in Pollard from third.
The Lions are back at it tomorrow, March 12 against Lynn in a double header at University Softball Stadium as the games are set for 1 and 3 pm.
