VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Saint Leo women's tennis team took down No. 21 Valdosta State, 8-1, on Sunday afternoon to move to 2-0 on the season.
The No. 3 Lions swept the singles matches for the second-straight day.
Coralie Pesenti was the first to wrap up her match, taking down Daniella Barta, 6-3, 6-2. Marine Beugre-Guyot followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Sabrina Schmidt. Isabella Robbiani added a 6-2, 6-2 win over Josephine Jedrychowski.
Natalia Siedliska topped Bea Morales, 7-6 (3) in a tie break situation, and followed with a 6-2 win to take the match. Anastasia Wagner also needed a tie break, as she took the first set 6-1 over Laura Ubeda. Ubeda pushed back, but Wagner took the second set 7-6 (4).
Pauline Helgesson used a marathon opening set win over Anke Poncelet, 7-6 (4), to claim the first, and then made quick work in the second, taking the match, 6-2.
Saint Leo opened the day with a 2-1 showing in doubles action. Siedliska and Wagner teamed up once again to open the season 2-0 as a pairing. They took down VSU's Morales and Jedrychowski, 8-2.
Pesenti teamed up with freshman Madeleine Gauthier, who saw her first action of the season. The pairing took down Poncelet and Barta, 8-2.
Saint Leo nearly saw a perfect day as Helgesson and Robbiani were barely inched out in the No. 2 doubles spot by VSU's Ubeda and Schmidt, 9-8 (1) in the waning moments of the match.
Saint Leo returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 14 at 9 A.M. as they host Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, and then at 12 P.M. that same day they will hose ASA Miami.
