Lions Fall at Barry 79-69 After Late Surge in Second Half

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team erased a 25-point deficit in the second half to get within six point before falling at Barry 79-69 on Wednesday, February 3rd inside the Health & Sports Center behind two career nights from Mary Redmond and Asia Royster.

The Lions erased a 25-point deficit in the second half behind Mary Redmond and Asia Royster's career-high nights. Redmond hit five three pointers in the second half to help Saint Leo get back into the game late in the fourth.

Barry saw three players go for double-digit scoring in Amra Elezovic, 26 points, Jackie Perez, 21 points, and Ines Kerin, 13 points, as the Buccaneers went on for the home court and Sunshine State Conference victory.

How It Happened…

1Q | The Lions opened the game with the first bucket before falling behind 6-2 with 7:50 to go in the opening period. Barry's Ines Kerin has connected on three-of-three from beyond the arc to lead all scorers. Saint Leo has failed to connect on a three going 0-for-6 in this opening period, as Barry ended the quarter with their largest lead of the quarter of nine. | Barry 18-9 |

2Q | Barry continued to control the game in the second period as the Buccaneers would extend their lead to 14 points with 1:49 to play. Barry has outscored the Lions 21-11 on points off of turnovers as Saint Leo has the slight edge in turnovers as 11 to 12. The Lions are outscoring the Bucs 14-6 in the paint but have only connected on 1-16 for three compared to Barry's 7-14 shooting. The Lions improved their shooting from the field to 58.3-percent in the second period. Chelsey Springs is leading the charge for the Lions with 10 points at the half as Mary Redmond is at eight and Asia Royster is at seven. 3Q | Saint Leo came out of the locker room and regained their confidence shooting. The Lions connected on 50-percent of their three's in the third. Mary Redmond who hit 3-of-5 to help Saint Leo cut into the Buccaneers largest lead 24 points. Barry shot 100-percent from the three and 71.4-percent from the field in the third. Redmond is accounted for 19 points and is leading the team going into the final period. | Barry 63-46 |

4Q | Barry started the final period with a 17 point lead but the Lions would come charging back and cut their lead to six points with 4:32 to play. After the Buccaneers pushed it back to an 11 point lead, Saint Leo would get within eight with a minute to play before Barry went on for their 10 point lead, 79-69. Mary Redmond hit two-of-two from beyond the arc in the final period as she finished with a career-high and game-high 27 points. | Barry 79-69 |

 

Points to Note

  • Mary Redmond connects on 6-of-12 from downtown to score a career-high 27 points. Her previous career-high was 18 points against Nova Southeastern on January 28th, 2015.
  • Chelsey Springs followed behind Redmond with 24 points on 10-of-19 shots from the field.
  • Asia Royster scores career-high 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field.
  • Springs finished with five rebounds to lead the Lions.
  • Saint Leo finished the game shooting 50-percent on the game from the field and 31.8-percent from beyond the arc.

For the Buccaneers

  • Barry was led by three players scoring in double-digits behind Amra Elezovic's 26 points. Jackie Perez added 21 and Ines Kerin had 13.
  • The Buccaneers outrebounded the Lions 32-21, and the assist category 28-12.
  • Barry shot 53.7-percent from the field and 46.2-percent from three point land. Perez led the Buccaneers on 5-11 shooting from beyond the arc.
  • Kimbreli Flournoy recorded game-high 12 rebounds on the night.
