Lions stalled by Spartans

SAINT LEO, Fla. –  The Saint Leo women's basketball fell to the University of Tampa on Saturday afternoon, 62-37, in the final regular season game.

The Lions opened up strong, taking a 16-11 first quarter lead, but were unable to maintain that strength of play down the stretch.

Mary Redmond was the lone Lion in double figures, scoring 12 points, while adding four rebounds and two assists.

How It Happened 
1Q | For the second straight game, Saint Leo game out on fire in the first quarter. The Lions took the lead on a free throw and did not look back in the quarter. The Lions saw balanced scoring inside and out, seeing Alysia Johnson and Chelsy Springs hit their post move shots, while Megan Leslie, Mary Redmond and Springs hit shots from long range to maintain a strong lead through the first. | Saint Leo 16-11 |

2Q | Tampa bounced back, hitting 46.2-percent of their shots, while Saint Leo hit just three shots in the period, adding two free throws. The Lions saw Springs add two baskets, giving the team a 20-13 lead, but from there, the visitor went on a 8-0 run before Gabby Ortiz tied the game at 21. The Lions took a 25-23 lead on a Mary Redmond three, but that was the last lead the Lions would have through the game. | Tampa 27-25 |

3Q | The Lions remained close through the third, nipping on Tampa's heels. However, a three minute scoreless drought down the stretch saw Tampa extend its lead to 40-32. It was a low scoring quarter for both teams, as Tampa added just 13 points, while the Lions were only able to net seven. | Tampa 40-32 |

4Q |  In the fourth quarter, the Lions saw Asia Royster tally all five of their points, as she connected on two of her three shot attempts, adding one free throw. The Lions only took 10 shots in the period, while Tampa connected on nine of 15 attempts, hitting four of seven threes as well. The Spartans committed no turnovers in the period, to seal the game | Tampa 62-37 |


Points to Note

  • Redmond recorded her 15th double-digit scoring performance of the season. In her sophomore campaign, Redmond finished the season averaging 9.5 points, while shooting 36.9-percent from three.
  • Royster finished the game with five points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.
  • Springs finished with a near double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing seven rebounds.

For the Spartans

  • Off the bench, Tampa saw Angela Alvarez tally a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebound. They also saw Jenny Horvatinovic add 11 points off the bench.
  • The Spratans forced Saint Leo into 19 turnovers, while only committing 11 themselves.
  • They also out-rebounded the Lions, 36-39.
