How It Happened…
Q | Saint Leo opened up the game in impressive fashion, using their post play to get things started as Alysia Johnson and Abby Peterson hit the opening three shots. The Lions shot an impressive 56.3-percent in the opening period, hitting nine of 16 shots, while grabbing 16 rebounds. The Lions defense backed up their offense, holding Rollins to just 14.3-percent shooting, while the Tars did not make their first basket until there was just 2:17 left in the period. The Tars also grabbed just three rebounds. | Saint Leo 24-7 |
Q | Rollins rebounded in the second quarter, opening on a 12-2 run, seeing the Lions go scoreless for three minutes and 21 seconds, before Mary Redmond hit back-to-back three's helping the Lions get back into rhythm. Over all it was a low scoring quarter, as Rollins scored just 13 points, while Saint Leo tallied just eight. | Saint Leo 32-20 |
Q | Saint Leo was unable to find offensive rhythm coming out of the break, shooting just 21.4 percent in the period, while closing it 0 for 7. However, the Lions defense helped keep them in the lead, as they held Rollins to just five baskets, and a 0 for 5 shooting streak to close the quarter as well. | Saint Leo 41-37 |
Q | It took three minutes and thirty seconds for either team to score in the final quarter, and in the Lions favor, it was Mary Redmond who was able to stick the lay-up. From there, Rollins saw Vernisha Andrews score six straight points and tie the game. The Tars got the lead on a Carly McLendon lay-up with 3:31 left to play. A four minute scoring drought did not help the Lions case, as their defense had to continue to fight. A Johnson lay-up ended the drought, and tied the game at 45, before RC's Andrews responded with the go-ahead basket. With one made free throw, Rollins went up by three. With 14.9 seconds left, Asia Royster hit the driving lay-up, bringing the score to 48-47, Rollins up by one, with possession. Despite having the possession, a Saint Leo offensive foul nullified the opportunity, and a following foul sent Rollins to the line. Rollins sunk both, giving the game a 51-47 score. A single free throw from Megan Leslie gave the game the final score. | RC 51-48 |
