Lions Sweep Eagles in Double-Header on Saturday

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Saint Leo's women's softball team took both games at Embry-Riddle on Saturday, February 20th at ERAU Softball Stadium.

Saint Leo improved to 9-0 on the season with both victories today by the score of 6-0 in game one and 4-1 in game two. The Lions were led by pitchers Alana Tabel and Samantha Tyler. Tabel picked up her third victory of the year in game one as Tyler picked up her second in game two.  Tabel finished with three strikeouts as Tyler had 10.

Sommer Pollard went 5-for-7 from the plate on the day scoring once and recording two RBI finishing with a .714 batting average. Rachael Heath hit .571 from the plate going 4-of-7 with two runs scored and two RBI.

With the two wins, Saint Leo has pushed it's win streak to 20 straight games dating back to April 3rd, 2015 marking the longest winning span in team history, the previous by the 1994 team that started out with 18 straight victories.

As a team, the Lions hit .371 from the plate and held their opponent to a .157 batting average. Saint Leo recorded 23 total hits with 10 runs scored and 28 total bases with only six strikeouts.  

GAME 1 - Saint Leo 6, Embry-Riddle 0

The Lions won game one 6-0 behind Alana Tabel's seven innings allowing five hits and no runs with three strikes. Tabel picked up her third win of the season. Sommer Pollard and Samantha Ohmie each went 2-for-3 from the plate as Pollard had two RBI and Ohmie scoring one run.

Saint Leo went up 2-0 in the top of the first on a Brooke Samios-Uy single up the middle scoring both Tiffany Thompson and Rachael Heath. The Lions added one more in the top of the second as Danielle Ferrara reached on an error and then advanced on a Bailey McKenna SAC bunt before coming home on an error by the left fielder.

In the top of the third, Saint Leo put three more across the plate as Ohmie started off the inning doubling down the left field line and coming in to score on a Brittany Creamer single. Sommer Pollard singled through the right side scoring Ferrara and Creamer before McKenna was out at the plate.

The Lions finished with 11 hits and six runs in the first game of the day.

 

GAME 2 - Saint Leo 4, Embry-Riddle 1

Saint Leo would sweep the day as the Lions defeated the Eagles 4-1. Samantha Tyler got the victory marking her second of the season on seven innings pitched with three hits and one run. Tyler struck out 10 batters in the 29 faced.

Rachael Heath went 3-for-3 from the dish while Brittany Creamer and Sommer Pollard both had a solid game going 2-for-3 and 3-for-4, respectively.

The Lions put one on the board in the top of the third by the way of a Heath stealing bases. Heath singled with a bunt and then stole second and third to get into scoring position before an out was recorded. Ohmie came through and singled to third scoring Heath.

Danielle Bottley started off the top of the fourth with a walk and then stole second. Pollard singled to shortstop advancing Bottley to third, on the throw. Heath came through in the clutch singling to left field scoring Bottley. Samios-Uy came up with one out and hit a sacrifice fly to left field as Pollard scored to put the Lions up 3-0.

The Eagles put one run in the three game series on the board in the bottom of the sixth cutting Saint Leo's lead to 3-1.

The lone run in the top of the seventh came after a triple by Ciera Schumaker in left center. Creamer singled through the right side scoring Schumaker as the Lions would go on for the final 4-1.

Saint Leo finished with 12 hits and four runs in the game.

 

Up Next

Saint Leo returns back to University Softball Stadium on campus to host Nova Southeastern in the conference opening series on Friday, February 26th and Saturday, February 27th. The game times for the weekend are Friday at 7PM and Saturday at 12 PM & 2 PM.
