Late Effort Not Enough in Lions Loss at Palm Beach Atlantic

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Saint Leo's women's basketball team lost 68-56 in a matchup with Palm Beach Atlantic on Wednesday night in the Rubin Arena behind a career-high 11 points off the bench from Britney Tang.

Britney Tang scored 11 points off the bench for the Lions in their 68-56 loss to PBA as she would make 3-of-4 three pointers in 11 minutes of play. Tang led the late charge for Saint Leo in the second half as the Lions were down by as many as 23 points with 5:12 to play in the fourth quarter.

Saint Leo was led by Izabell Skoogh who put up 16 points on 4-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc and a 13 point effort from Chelsy Springs. Alysia Johnson cleaned up the glass, bringing in a game-high nine boards.

Palm Beach Atlantic would force Saint Leo to turn the ball over 29 times in the course of the game as they picked up their 12th win of the season. PBA saw Nkiru Anyagaligbo score 18 points to lead the way while Janelle Cannon and Hannah Grim added 16 points apiece.

How It Happened…

1Q | Saint Leo came out the gates and jumped on top early as the Lions' defense caused seven turnovers in the opening quarter. Saint Leo would push out to an 8-4 lead before Palm Beach Atlantic got back into the game stopping the Lions' offense, tying it at 8-8. An Izabell Skoogh three pointer would break the lead putting Saint Leo up 11-8 to with two minutes to play. Five free-throws from PBA's Janelle Cannon put the Sailfish in front 13-11 with eight seconds to go. Maranie Harris-Kuiper would connect on a jumper right before the end of the quarter to tie the game. | 13-13 |

 

2Q | Palm Beach Atlantic came out in the second quarter and opened the game up to a five point lead causing a timeout by Saint Leo with 8:56 to play, 18-13. Chelsy Springs would score five points on two possessions for the Lions to get Saint Leo within two points, 20-18. PBA would keep the pressure on Saint Leo causing 10 Lions' turnovers, while the Sailfish went out to a 10 point lead, 28-18. Saint Leo would cut the PBA lead to eight at the end of the quarter on an Asia Royster three point play after cross-over drawing the foul and the 'And-1' free throw. Springs leads the team with 10 points, scoring seven of them in the second quarter. | PBA 33-25 |

3Q | Saint Leo came out of the locker room and closed within five points with 7:56 to play, 36-31. PBA would go on a 15-0 run to open the game up to their largest lead of 20 points with 3:20 on the clock, 51-31. The Lions would get within 17 points at the end of the quarter on a Britney Tang three pointer with under one minute to play. | PBA 55-38 |

4Q | After the Lions' scored the opening points of the final quarter, PBA would go on to score eight straight to get back up to a 20 point lead with 4:50 to play, 63-43. Saint Leo would drain four three pointers from Skoogh and Tang down the stretch to close within 12 points before time expired. Saint Leo was led by Skoogh who had 16 points followed by Springs with 13. Tang would chip in 11 points off the bench going 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. | PBA 68-56 |

 

Points to Note

  • Izabell Skoogh led the Lions with 16 points connecting on 4-of-9 from downtown while grabbing six boards.
  • Chelsy Springs added 13 points while Britney Tang scored 11 points off the bench.
  • Alysia Johnson pulled in game high nine rebounds for Saint Leo.
  • As a team, Saint Leo shot 37.7-percent from the field and 34.8-percent from three point land. The Lions connected on 8-of-23 from downtown. Saint Leo won the rebounding battle grabbing 39 compared to PBA's 36.
 

For the Sailfish

  • PBA was led by Nkiru Anyagligbo who scored 18 points in the victory, and grabbed team high eight rebounds.
  • Janelle Cannon and Hannah Grim each added 16 points apiece.
  • As a team, the Sailfish shot 42.4-percent from the field and caused 29 Saint Leo turnovers to just 17 of their own. PBA went 17-for-28 from the free throw line.
  • The Sailfish outscored the Lions 30-6 on points off turnovers and 40-16 in the paint.
