Saint Leo men's tennis goes 2-0 in doubleheader

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's tennis team went 2-0 on the day after facing Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and ASA College Miami. ABAC is nationally ranked No. 12 at the junior college level, while ASA Miami holds the down the No. 1 spot in all of junior college.

In the first match, Saint Leo took down ABAC, 6-3.

A 3-0 start in doubles as Fons Verberne and Egor Panyushkin opened up action taking down Deepak Vishavkama and Martin Zarate, 8-1, in the No. 2 pairing.

 Alberto Barroso-Campos and Alex Theiler followed with a win over Elvyn Nguyen and Eymeric Chevalier, 8-1.

In a battle in the No. 3 doubles match-up, Jaime Bueno and Guillaume Vanelven took down Aykut Apturahman and Ray Donovan, 9-7.

Barroso-Campos dominated Nguyen in singles play, downing him 6-0, 6-2, giving the Lions a 4-0 lead.

A win from Elliot Carnello sealed the win, as the Lions went up, 5-0. Carnello downed Apturahman, 6-2, 6-3.

ABAC took the No. 2, 4, and 5 slots, to bring it to a 5-3 score before James Defusto topped Colton Phillips, 6-1, 6-2, to give the Lions their final point.

In the second match, the Lions topped Asa College Miami, 6-3.

The Lions started in a deficit coming out of the doubles matches, down 2-1. Saint Leo took the win in the No. 1 doubles spot seeing Barroso-Campos and Theiler pair up to take down Callum Poland-Smith and Federico Gomez in exciting fashion, 9-8 (3), in tie-break.

Panyushkin evened up the score with a win in the No. 3 slot, taking down Gomez, 6-3, 6-1.

Bueno followed with a 6-2, 6-3, in the No. 4 slot, taking down Eric Ahren-Moonga.

In the No. 2 single spot, Theiler topped Nicolas Rouanet, 6-3, 6-2.

Barroso-Campos, who is now 4-0 on the season, topped Callum Poland-Smith, the No. 2 singles player in all of Junior College, in a battle to seal the win for the Lions, 7-6 (11), 6-4.

The Lions took the No. 6 spot as Vanelven took down Patricio Zarazua, 8-3. The Lions took the loss in the No. 5 as Carnello retired to end his match.

The Lions return to action on Feb. 27 as they head to Flagler for a 10 A.M match.
