Skoogh drops career-high 24 points, Lions fall 76-56 at Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. – Izabell Skoogh connected on a career-best seven three point field goals and finished the game with a career- high 24 points, but it was not enough as the Saint Leo women's basketball team fell 76-56 against University of Tampa on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans countered Skoogh's three-point shooting with their own long range bombs, connecting 11 on 61-percent shooting from behind the arc as a team.

Chelsy Springs aided Skoogh in the offensive effort, adding 13 points, a team-high six rebounds and a team-high four assists.

How It Happened…

1Q | Both teams played even through the first quarter, with the Lions leading for a majority of the first half of the period. Tampa started hitting shots from deep, taking a lead through end of the first. The Lions and the Spartans each scored eight points in the paint and they each registered four points off turnovers. The difference was three three-point field goals for the hosts, while the Lions hit just one. | UT 21-16 |

2Q | Tampa inflated their lead to 16 points before the Lions hit their first shot of the second quarter when Izabell Skoogh connected from long range at the six minute mark. The Spartans hit five three's in the second half, spreading the Lions defense out. However, Tampa only recorded four points in the paint. Saint Leo hit 44-percent of their shots in the first half, but the Spartans hit 52-percent, including 73-percent on three-point shot attempts. | UT 45-28 |

3Q | Chelsy Springs opened the quarter with the Lions first four points, but a two of 10 shooting to close the half halted the Lions comeback effort. Springs finished the quarter with eight points, while the team shot 42.9-percent. However, Tampa hit 63.6-percent of their shots to counter. | UT 62-41 |

4Q | Skoogh hit nine-straight points for the Lions to open up the period, with her third three of the period coming at the 6:42 mark, however, the Lions were held scoreless until the 1:13 mark when Asia Royster connected on a free throw. The Lions totaled 13 points in the quarter, getting a late three from Jackie Layng, while the Spartans scored 14. | UT 76-56 |

Points to Note

  • Skoogh now has surpassed 20-plus points for the second time this season. She tallied 22 points against Nova Southeastern back on Nov. 21.
  • Springs has scored in the double figures for the 14th time, and for the fifth-straight game.
  • The Lions committed a season-low six turnovers in the game.

For the Spartans

  • The Spartans were led by Juliana Cavallaro who had 19 points, Ellen Nurmi added 13 and a team-high nine assists. Elena de Alfredo added 11.
  • Tampa averages just 36.3-percent shooting from deep, which was doubled versus the Lions as they hit 61-percent.
  • The hosts also used a 26-18 point in the paint differential to add to their lead.
