#17 Saint Leo tops #24 Valdosta State in comeback fashion

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The No. 17 Saint Leo women's soccer team needed extra time to do it, but they topped No. 24 Valdosta State in comeback fashion to move to 1-0-1 on the early season. The Lions came back twice in the game, forcing overtime with just six minutes left, before capitalizing on a game winning goal.

Top Performers

  • Monsengo proved to be a difference-maker for the Lions, knocking in the game-tying goal with six minutes left to play. She then provided the dish for Kabangu's game-winning goal.
  • Kabangu knocked in the game-winner to give the Lions their first win of the season 

Coach's Thoughts
"The girls showed fantastic spirit in coming from behind twice, and they understood the importance of this regional game. We possessed, and took the shots we needed to take, and I felt like we deserved to come out the win. We had girls step up, and finish, and now we move on to tomorrow."

Points to Note

  • Gignac's goal marked the 12th of her career. She had six in her freshman season, and five as a sophomore.
  • Monsengo tallied her first career goal as a Saint Leo Lion.
  • Kabangu's goal moves her career-total up to 41 goals. She has also scored in consecutive games. This was also her ninth game-winning goal. 
  • Imani Clayton (Jr., GK, Alexandria, Va.) made her first career-start against Valdosta State.
  • Saint Leo outshot Valdosta, 10-6, and 8-3 were on goal.

For the Blazers

  • Mallory McDaniel assisted both goals from the Blazers on Sunday afternoon.
  • McCall Gardner made a game-high five saves for the VSU.
