SAINT LEO, Fla. – In the last regular-season home game for senior Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio, the No. 5 Saint Leo University men's tennis team bested Eckerd College by a 9-0 score in its Senior Day at the Saint Leo Tennis Complex.
The Lions improve to 15-4 on the year with a 5-1 tally in Sunshine State Conference play while the visiting Tritons fall to 6-9, 0-5 in SSC action.
The Green and Gold concluded the doubles round with a 3-0 advantage as No. 7 duo of Alex Theiler and Bruno Sisti blanked Yosua Adiyasa and Frazier Springfield 8-0 to kick off the match. Guillaume Vanelven and Fons Verberne cruised past Stephen Felman and Victor Appelqvist by an 8-3 set while Egor Panyushkin and Netanel Alcabas mirrored with an 8-3 win in their matchup.
Gonzalez-Tarrio picked up his team-leading 14th win of the season, defeating Frazier Springfield in straight-sets. No. 21 Theiler defeated Adiyasa for the second time, as the junior won the singles duel by 6-2 and 6-1 sets. Alcabas clinched with a 6-4 and 6-0 win over Felman to take the contest by an astounding 5-0 margin.
Oskar Nurmio and James Defusto each picked up straight-set wins while Sam El Nehmani closed out the contest with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Saint Leo swept the Tritons 9-0 to conclude play.
Saint Leo will hit the road to play West Alabama on Saturday, April 11th, slated for a 3 p.m. start at the VSU Tennis Courts in Valdosta, Ga.
