Lions maul No. 44 Panthers in SSC play

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Continuing its Sunshine State Conference tear, the No. 5 Saint Leo women's tennis team pummeled the visiting No. 44 Florida Tech by a 7-2 final score Monday at the Saint Leo Tennis Complex.

The Lions improve to 14-3 on their 2015 campaign with a 4-1 tally in SSC matchups while the Panthers dip to 12-8, 1-4 in conference play.

The Green and Gold took clean sweeps in all but one singles matchup, as the Lions rolled through the Panthers lineup with ease.

Saint Leo concluded doubles play with a 2-1 advantage as Isabella Robbiani and Gabrielle Paul trumped Kayla Hergott and Erin Egoroff by an 8-3 set.  The Lions tandem of Marine Beugre-Guyot and Pauline Helgesson bested Meritt Rabson and Mariana Castaneiras by an 8-2 final score.

The Lions built momentum in singles play as Helgesson ousted Castaneiras in straight-sets for the first singles win.  Maria Benkirane dominated Hergott as the senior did not drop a set, defeating her Panthers counterpart by a pair of 6-0 wins.

Beugre-Guyot clinched the win, battling Chloe Chanley to a 6-1, 6-1 win, taking the contest with a 5-1 advantage.  Katherine Zaatini outdueled Jessica Widmark behind a familiar set of 6-1 wins before No. 14 Robbiani ended play with a 6-3 and 6-4 win in the top flight.

The Lions will continue SSC play with a 3 p.m. home contest against Eckerd College on Thursday at the Saint Leo Tennis Complex.  The match will also be the final home contest for seniors Paula Montoya and Benkirane and will serve as the senior day for women's tennis.
