SAINT LEO, Fla. – Competing for the Sunshine State Conference Women's Tennis Championship, the No. 5 Saint Leo University women's tennis team fell to No. 2 Barry University by a 5-0 final score on Saturday at the Saint Leo Tennis Complex.
The Bucs emerge as the 2015 SSC champions, improving to 20-1 on the season while the Lions drop to 18-5 on the year.
Barry whirled through doubles play, as the Bucs took a 3-0 advantage heading into single action. Elisabeth Abanda and Kimmy Twelker defeated their Saint Leo counterparts Marine Beugre-Guyot and Pauline Helgesson 8-2 to finish first in tandem play. No. 9 duo of Sonja Larsen and Ana Pain took the top flight over No. 8 Isabella Robbiani and Maria Benkirane, 8-3 before No. 3 twosome of Linda Fritschken and Emma Onila bested Gabrielle Paul and Paula Montoya by an 8-3 score.
Barry's Twelker earned the fourth point of the match, defeating Paul in straight sets while No. 6 Larsen clinched the win and earned Barry the 2015 Sunshine State Conference Championship.
The Lions await potential postseason selection, with the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Selection Show airing Tuesday, April 28 at 8:00 p.m.
