Lions extend scoreless-streak with win over Mocs

LAKELAND, Fla. – Continuing its scoreless inning streak, the Saint Leo University softball team shutout Florida Southern College by a 5-0 final score at Barnett Field on Friday evening.  The Green and Gold have five consecutive shutouts and have not given up a run in 36 innings dating back to April 11th.

The Lions improve to 37-12 with a 13-9 tally in Sunshine State Conference play while the hosting Mocs fall to 19-30 with a 5-17 mark in SSC matchups.

The Saint Leo pitching staff ranks second in all of Division II, boasting a team ERA of 1.31, anchored by Friday night's winner, Alana Tabel (16-5).

The starting pitcher threw seven scoreless innings while yielding five hits and issuing four walks.  The junior struck out five batters while shrinking her ERA to 0.94.

Senior Cassie Boggs and freshman Brittany Creamer led the offense, as the duo each hit 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.  Boggs ended the contest with a double and a triple while Creamer notched a home run and a RBI single to her credit.

Saint Leo scored a pair of runs in the second inning as Boggs tallied a double before first-baseman Michelle George peppered a triple into right-center.  Freshman Creamer notched a RBI base-hit to drive home George and give the Lions a 2-0 lead in the second stanza.

The Lions picked up where they left off in the third, as senior tandem Adriana Sanders and Angela Kafalas each singled before Boggs doubled the score with one swing of the bat, lacing a triple between the outfielders to tack on two runs and push the Green and Gold advantage to 4-0.

Shortstop Creamer blasted her fifth home run of the season, a sixth inning solo shot to increase the Lion lead to 5-0 and conclude the scoring for the game.

FSC hurler Brandi Jones (13-14) was the pitcher of record for the Mocs, tossing seven innings while allowing five runs off of nine hits.  The right-hander struck out three and issued no walks.

The Green and Gold will round out the regular season with a Saturday doubleheader, scheduled for a new time of 12:00 p.m. for the first contest at Barnett Field on the campus of Florida Southern College.  Live stats will be available through www.saintleolions.com.
