MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Playing the No. 2 team in the nation for its final regular-season contest, the No. 5 Saint Leo women's tennis team suffered a 9-0 setback to Barry University on Saturday at the Buccaneer Tennis Center.
The Lions conclude the regular-season with a 16-4 overall record with a 6-2 mark in Sunshine State Conference play while the hosting Bucs improve to 18-1 and a pristine 8-0 in SSC contests.
The Bucs swept doubles action, as No. 9 tandem, Sonja Larsen and Ana Pain defeated the No. 8 duo of Isabella Robbiani and Maria Benkirane, 8-2. Doubles pairing Paula Montoya and Gabrielle Paul fell 8-2 to Linda Fritschken and Emma Onila before Marine Beugre-Guyot and Pauline Helgesson dropped their doubles match by a familiar 8-2 score.
The second flight was the first to finish in singles play, as Elisabeth Abanda bested Benkirane by 6-1 and 6-3 set scores before the No. 3 ITA-ranked Emma Onila trumped Beugre-Guyot by 7-5 and 6-0 sets to clinch the match.
No. 27 Fritschken defeated Montoya by 6-2 and 6-4 sets while both Helgesson and Paul fell to their Buccaneer counterparts. No. 14 Robbiani fell to Bucs No. 6 Larsen in three sets to finish the top-5 showdown.
Concluding the regular season, the Lions await seeding for the Sunshine State Conference Tennis Championship. The tournament hosted by Saint Leo begins on April 23rd with championships played on Saturday April 25th.
