Box Score 2 MIAMI SHORES, Fla.- The Lions' baseball team ended a three-game skid with a pair of wins in a doubleheader at Feinbloom Field against the Barry Bucs this Saturday afternoon. Game one ended with a score of 9-4 while game two concluded 10-3.
The two wins push Saint Leo over the 30-win threshold with an overall record of 31-11 and 12-9 in the Sunshine State Conference. Saint Leo has recored more than 30 wins in each of Coach Sean O'Connor's three seasons as head coach. Barry University drops to 18-24 with a 6-12 conference record.
In game one, freshman righty Jordan Pendleton pitched the first complete game of his career and his sixth win of the season spreading four runs on 10 hits, while registering five strikeouts. Picking up the loss was Jonathan Hernandez, his fourth of the season. Hernandez went 5.1 innings, giving up five runs on nine hits while striking out eight.
Troy Sieber made the most of his one hit in game one, belting his 14th home run of the season, a two-run blast in the eighth inning. Sieber has homered four times in the last three games pushing his RBI total to 55 on the year.
Second baseman Alex Mata went 2-for-5 in game one collecting three RBI and crossing the plate once. Shortstop Taylor Perez went 3-for-4 adding two RBI of his own.
Game two began as a pitcher's duel as neither team scored through the first four innings. In the top of the fifth, the Green and Gold exploded for four runs behind a Bobby Twitty two-run home run, his sixth of the season. Troy Sieber grounded into a double play with bases loaded, but Dale Irving crossed the plate for the third run of the inning. Then, senior Nick Perez scored on a wild pitch for the final run of the frame.
Barry plated one on a Ramon Valdez RBI double in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 4-1.
Then in the top of the sixth, Bobby Twitty singled for two more RBI bring his total in the game to four. The Lions' pushed their lead to 7-1 as Twitty scored on a Nick Perez single.
Saint Leo would pick up one more run in the seventh pushing its lead to 8-1 before Barry would answer back with single runs in each the bottom of the seventh and eighth, cutting the lead to 8-3.
In the top of the ninth, sophomore Chad Miller capped the Green and Gold run total by hitting his first home run of the season, a two-run shot.
Senior Jordan Taylor took the hill for the Lions in game two earning his third win of the season. Taylor pitched a solid 7.2 innings allowing just three runs (one earned) on eight hits while recording three strikeouts. Fellow senior Tyrone Miller closed out the final 1.1 innings surrendering just one hit and striking out two.
Taking the loss for the Buccaneers was Adrian Benitez who fell to 2-3 on the year. Benitez allowed three runs on five hits over 4.0 innings. In relief of Benitez was Joeanthony Rivera and Daniel Broeseker who combined for seven runs on six hits over the final 5.0 innings.
Saint Leo will return home to Thomas B. Southard stadium for a Tuesday night matchup April 21 with Florida Southern beginning at 6:00 p.m.
