BOCA RATON, Fla. – Riding a six-game win streak, the Saint Leo University softball team shutout Lynn University, 2-0 Friday afternoon at the Lynn Softball Field.
The Lions improve to 34-12 with a 10-9 tally in Sunshine State Conference play while the Fighting Knights draw even at 20-20 with a familiar 10-9 mark in SSC matchups.
Seniors McKenzie Burns and Adriana Sanders each ended with a pair of hits as the latter plated the lone RBI of the game. Burns added a stolen base and made a spectacular catch in right-center to preserve a shutout and pick up a crucial conference win.
Senior Cassie Boggs laced a single up the middle to begin the fourth frame before moving to second due to an error from the Fighting Knights. Lynn would commit another error to cause the first run of the game to score as heads up base-running from Boggs gave the Lions a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning.
The Green and Gold tacked on another run as Sanders laced a RBI single to score Rachael Heath from third. Saint Leo increased its lead to 2-0 over Lynn after five stanzas.
Junior Alana Tabel (15-5) threw a complete-game shutout, surrendering a pair of hits while striking out two batters for her team-leading 15th win of the season. The clean sheet is the fourth of the season for the right-hander, as Tabel leads the conference in ERA with a 0.99 mark while also ranking ninth in Division II.
Fighting Knight's hurler Francais Olexa (6-11) was tabbed with the loss, pitching seven innings, allowing seven hits and a pair of unearned runs.
