SAINT LEO, Fla. -- The Saint Leo men's lacrosse team had its two-game win streak snapped by No. 12 Mercy College Sunday afternoon. The Lions held a 7-3 halftime advantage, but the Mavericks outscored the Green & Gold 6-1 in the third quarter for the come from behind win.
The Lions led three quarters of the game, but five unasnwered goals for nearly eight minutes gave Mercy a 10-8 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Saint Leo trailed for most of the fourth quarter, and was down 12-11 when Dave Moore left the goal and caused a Maverick turnover. With 26 seconds on the clock, Saint Leo cleared the ball and drew a Mercy Penalty. In a man-up situation and five seconds left in regularion, junior Chad Marino took a deep shot to tie the contest but Mercy goalie Michael Schneider made the save as the clock was about to expire.
Junior Dylan Yonts led the Lions with four points (3 goals, 1 assist) and Marino had three points (3 goals). Senior Kevin Hutchinson and freshman Jake Gilmour each had two points, one goal and one assist a piece.
Jessee Wood and Robert Rossi led Mercy with game-highs of five points. Rossi scored four of his five goals in the second half, including three in the third quarter.
Saint Leo outshot Mercy 19-10 in the first half, but Mercy turned the tables, taking 23 shots in the second half to Saint Leo's 13.
Dave Moore finished with 12 saves, including eight in the second half. Will Cothron won 19 of the games 27 faceoffs. Cothron was 19-of-25 (.760) at the X.
The Lions will return to University Turf Stadium Thursday, March 12. Saint Leo will host Lees-McRae at 7:00 pm before its Sunshine State Conference opener Saturday March, 14 against Florida Tech.
